Quicos (Giant Crunchy Corn Kernels)
• $2 to $9, depending on weight
• Whole Foods Market
I picked up a little container of these giant, salty baked corn kernels at Whole Foods during a trip to San Francisco last week. Emma and I munched on them during work sessions and found them totally irresistible! Emma pronounced them high-end beer nuts. They're salty, crunchy, and super tasty.

Corn nuts, you mean? And did you know that you can get these covered in chocolate? Heaven.
Yumm! This are very common in spanish gastronomy, and as you say they go perfectly with a beer or even a nice cocktail (Margarita fits perfectly). They also make a really nice coat ingredient if crushed in small bites!
I'm currently living in Spain, and these are a very common snack! Or actually, here we eat fried corn kernels, or maíz frito. I find that their flavor is reminiscent of Fritos, but they have a better crunch. I would love to try them baked!
High end Corn Nuts - leave it to Whole Foods to jack up the price. Here's the real thing:

I worked on this account when I was in advertising. We went nuts eating samples, until I broke a tooth! Haven't had one since.
P.S. - the ranch flavored are amazing.
I'm with Frank - the Planters kind are pretty great. That said, if you were going to be eating them on a regular basis, I'm sure the WF kind has fewer preservatives--and would also make you poor.
I want to make my own! Have a recipe?
We ate these in Peru! We called them maiz cancha. Much cheaper, of course. Kind of street food. Yummy!
lol why not just call them corn nuts.. that is what they are.. $9 for corn nuts? no thanks.
