Where would we be without our vegetable peeler? It's definitely on our list of essential prep tools and utensils. If you cook a lot from scratch, your vegetable peeler probably gets a lot of use! So, you need a good one: sharp, easy to maneuver, and effective. Here are 5 great ones:
• 1 Messermeister Pro Touch Swivel Peeler, $12 from Amazon: Highly recommended by Cook's Illustrated, it's also the peeler of choice for award-winning cookbook author Joanne Weir.
• 2 Kuhn Rikon Swiss Peeler, $4 from Sur La Table: Made with a carbon-steel blade, this peeler is one of our favorites. As Kitchn reader purdygirl says: "I think Kuhn Rikon is great. Their vegetable peeler, a three dollar item, is the best peeler I have ever used."
• 3 CUTCO Vegetable Peeler, $27 from CUTCO representatives: we reviewed this peeler (see our full review here) and gave it high marks for doing a basic job in a quiet, thoroughly competent manner.
• 4 Swissmar Peeler Scalpel Blade, $9.50 from Amazon: the scalpel blade peeler works well on hard fruits and vegetables, but is also great for creating thin shavings of Parmesan cheese, for example, or chocolate.
• 5 OXO Good Grips Swivel Peeler, $8.95 from Crate & Barrel: in our review of this peeler, we said it was beautiful because it works! It 'grips on the handle help to race through a pile of potatoes or the tougher skin of a squash, maintaining its sharpness through over a year of heavy use." It's also suitable for both left- and- right-handed cooks.

Floral Drink Dispen...

I've had the Oxo one for a few years and LOVE the way it peels--recently I bought a second, different-brand one that looked identical, and it is noticeably inferior. BUT after a few years of running through the dishwasher, the black rubber handle has started to get sticky and leaves a sticky black residue on my hands (the same thing has happened with several of my other Oxo utensils with the same kind of handle). Such a bummer. Has anyone had this happen? I'm still tempted to buy the same one again, though, because it just works so much better than any other peeler I've used...
I love my OXO peeler. I agree with Brooklynnina, other peelers feel and function inferior. I used a swiss peeler like the Kuhn Rikon pictured in school and I was constantly fighting with it (which made for bad times on my knife cut tests).
My vegetable peelers and can openers are two things that rarely go in the dishwasher in my kitchen. I quickly rinse them with soapy warm water, dry, and put back in the drawer. I haven't had that sticky residue happen, but maybe that's because I don't often run it through the washer.
I had an oxo and enjoyed it, but after years of use, it dulled too much. I replaced it with a zyliss, which I might actually like even more.
I have the Cutco one and I love it. like all of their products, it is very, very sharp.
I had an OXO one, but I feel like it got dull pretty fast, but for the price it's a good product.
Peeler is a must have in the kitchen for me too after not having it for a while and realize I cannot do it just with knives, at least not efficiently. A good peeler goes a long way.
Kuhn Rikon!!! It is my absolute favorite peeler, easier to handle than anything else, super cheap, and easy to find! also, lots of great colors to choose from. I won't use anything else if I can help it.
