Have you heard about the 'cinnamon challenge'? The dare is to try and swallow a spoonful of cinnamon without water, and it's gone viral—with 30,000 related videos currently on YouTube. Seem strange? It is, but it's not really something to laugh at.
The dare is most popular with kids and teenagers, but even the governor of Illinois did it on a live radio show. Not surprisingly, doctors are alarmed at this growing trend. According to this recent article in The Wall Street Journal, cinnamon doesn't break down very fast and can cause gagging, vomiting, or worse, serious lung inflammation.

The Governor of Illinois, really? Isn't this darwin's law in action?
Growing trend? People were doing this when I was in college 7 or 8 years ago. I can only imagine how painful it would be to try swallowing a tablespoon of straight cinnamon all at once, but I don't know that it's any worse than any of the other 'challenges' kids come up with. And I can bet that they won't be repeating it, unlike the beer bongs and keg-standing that seems to happen every weekend.
There are times when I despair for the human race.
When I was a freshman in college (10 years ago...ack!) the challenge that everyone wanted in on was to try and chug a gallon of milk. Supposedly its physically impossible, and plenty of vomiting would ensure. So gross.
Didn't you guys see this on 1,000 ways to die? No thanks.
...plenty of vomiting would ENSUE. Sorry.
seen it, so funny! complete numpties.
Cinnamon? Why? At least nutmeg gets you high (allegedly).
I did this once, around 8 years ago, and didn't die or get sick. I was young and it was a dare. People can die any time, eating anything, walking, driving... this is far from the most dangerous dumb bet I've ever heard of.
Everybody knows you have to roll the cinnamon up in a banana skin and smoke it. Sheesh! :)
My friend did this when I was in college. He was up ALL NIGHT hacking and coughing and trying to throw up. Really not smart to try.
Formerly from Chicago, I would say that Illinois governors do many things I wouldn't emulate. ;)
Ick, I don't even like cinnamon as a flavor/scent. I can't imagine trying to eat it straight up.
well people used to swallow gold fish or try to fit as many people as possible into a phone booth.
How about choking? How many times have I not started to choke from just shaking ground cinnamon on pudding--just from the powder in the air!?
I love cinnamon, but I'll admit it's dangerous at times.
it's about as dangerous as chubby bunny. sorry, but this is such a false alarm, it seems ludicrous that it's getting this much national attention.. i've done it (yeah, i must be the downfall of the human race...) and it's just a stupid party trick. like shot gunning a beer while doing a handstand. which i've also done.
Umm... this is just lame.
For the record, I do occassionally take cinnamon capsules to help regulate my blood sugar.
Alexis, lol!
Cinnamon is a blood thinner and can also effect people's blood sugar levels. If you are someone that may have trouble with those issues then this could be especially dangerous. It is also something that can raise heart rate, again something that could cause problems for people.
People forget that just because it is sold in the grocery store with the baking stuff, doesn't mean that it hasn't been used as a medicinal spice for ages.
Keep in mind also, if the person is actually using real cinnamon or cassia which is not "true cinnamon" but is from the same type of plant they may not be exposed to some of the more potent side effects associated with cinnamon. basically not all Cinnamon is the same.
Alexis & Jekka10....... I am amused! ;)
The governor of Illinois is so desparate to be liked it's a bit sad, really. The last guy was a crook but at least he was a crook with personality.
I live in Illinois & saw video of it right after it happened...apparently the radio guy had done it on a previous day, puked, and asked the governor if he'd do it when he was on the radio show. The crazy part was that the governor didn't even flinch! Made kind of a funny face, though. When it comes to politicians here, nothing surprises me anymore.
I've done this before (6 years ago). I had cinnamon boogers for a week and still don't like cinnamon very much because of this :/
I read in a magazine recently that around a teaspoon of cinnamon per day can boost your metabolism (or something), all I could think was - imagine all the people unknowingly trying to eat that one teaspoon at one, by itself, rather than in their oatmeal, in baking etc like the magazine must have meant! hahaha
