Growing up I remember quite clearly going to my grandmother's house. For dinner she would often order pizza from the local joint and each time I would cross my fingers that it would be delicious. Every time that warm box arrived and the lid was opened, there they sat, staring back at me — anchovies! A deal killer. What are you pizza turn-offs?
OK, so I could never see the eyes of those anchovies, but I knew, I just KNEW they were staring back at me somewhere. Although I like their taste now on other things, I'm still not a fan of them on pizza. Even though I'll eat a piece of pizza pie whenever, if there's fish on it, I'm out like trout.
Do you have a pizza turn-off? Aside from foods you might be allergic to, what items don't quite float your boat? Is it raw onions because they overpower? Fresh tomatoes because they're too squishy? What about seafood or different meats? Let us know below!

Being a vegetarian, any meat is the deal-breaker. Being an adventurous eater, anything else is fair game!
I don't have any deal-breaking turnoffs (besides meat), but I definitely have a few ingredients that will make me think twice about whether I really need to eat. Button mushrooms and huge pieces of bell pepper top the list. And I'm very picky if there's going to be tomato sauce.
For me, pizza is about a balance of all the stuff that you like. So a big pizza turn-off is too much of any one pizza component. The biggest one is too much cheese. Closely followed by too much sauce.
Not a big fan of fresh tomatoes because they get watery and then you get wet pizza. And that's kind of gross.
GREASE! I hate an overly greasy pizza. I've definitely been guilty of blotting my slices with a napkin before eating.
I'm not a fan of fruit like pineapple on pizza. I guess I like a classic pie. When I want a pizza, I want it to be what I love about pizza, gooey cheese, tomato sauce, tasty veggies and cured or spicy meats, not some experimental conglomeration of weirdness. Not that I'm per se against that, but it requires a special mood for me.
I LOVE anchovies on pizza! Am I the only one?
I have met very few pizzas I don't like. My all-time favorite is from Pizza Man just north of New Orleans in Louisiana. It's a crabmeat and artichoke pizza that will make you go weak at the knees.
I'm going with Lynell on this one-- pineapple on pizzas. I just don't get it. Also, any form of barbecue sauce. Ew.
Bad sausage. Being from Chicago, pizza must have sausage. Not pepperoni (although as a second ingredient it's fine, having already put good Italian sausage on it). It should be fresh -- not pre-cooked -- spicy, fennel optional. Gristly, bland "breakfast sausage" flavored sausage is an abomination.
Olives, mushrooms, and green peppers. Green peppers ruin the flavor of everything!
Green olives. Even if I pick them off, I can still taste the residue.
Another pineapple hater. It just does not go with pizza (especially when combined with tomato sauce). And the so-called "sweet chili Thai" sauce that a certain pizza chain uses, which leaves the pizza cloyingly sweet.
All mushrooms (other than truffles). Anything else is fair game.
I wouldn't say it ruins a pizza (i'm still stuffing it in my face), but I really really dislike toppings under the cheese. This is especially terrible with pepperoni, which deserve to sit on top, shrivel up a little, get crispy on the edges, and develop little pools of grease that I can dab off with a napkin to pretend that I'm a real lady. Under the cheese that grease gets trapped and makes a thick slippery layer that pulls away from the crust when you bite into it, no good!
As a vegan I steer clear of all meats and cheeses. That said- I don't really like fake cheeses, either.
My biggest pizza turn off though is too much dough. I like my pizza crust cracker thin with a good helping of sauce and a ton of veggies!
The only thing that could keep me off a pizza would be a cold pizza!
Too much cheese. I am completely grossed out by anything more than a generous sprinkle.
Thick crust! Can't stand it. I'm a NYer, so no crust is thin enough!
I second the person that said grease. There is nothing more gross than seeing mini pools of grease in each pepperoni, over flowing into rivers between the slices... and worse...an oily bottom crust? NASTY!
Too many veggies can make a firm, crisp crust turn squishy.
And a much more specific pet peeve: if my office orders pizza for us all, one of the pies is always a BBQ chicken that has red onions and cilantro on it. It seems that most of us don't like one or the other (if not both), so there's always a ton of it left that no one wants. Either the person doing the ordering or my boss must love it.
Doesn't your pizza get really greasy from using fresh sausage?
Anchovies and spinach (not necessarily together) ruin pizza for me.
I adore pineapple on pizza!
Haha, yes, I too am anti-anchovy. Anything else is fair game!
Melted cheese. Thick, doughy crust. Too much tomato sauce.
Black olives and green peppers. And undercooked grocery-store tomatoes. Yuck.
I love anchovies on pizza (big seafood lover). I cannot believe no one has said this yet..chicken on pizza! No no no! Rubbery, awful and bland. Bleh.
Agree about chicken - don't like it on pizza, in pasta or between bread.
Chicken!
Pineapple!
Fish of any kind!
And, personally, I don't like bell peppers but I don't think they're a pizza sin, just not my thing.
I can usually pick off most things I don't like (I know I'm picky, so I just quietly remove the offending objects). However there are a few things that should never be put on pizza. Pineapple is top of the list - it is much too sweet to be on a pizza. Even when I pick it off, the juice remains. Pepperoni is also another big turn-off; even after peeling it off, there's always far too much grease left.
My favorite pizza, however, has a nice thick crust and loads of extra cheese.
mushrooms. olives. seafood. artichokes. eggplant. anchovies. LETTUCE. chains have started putting weeeeeeird things on their pizzas lately.
I make pizza at home, rarely ordering it anymore, and that way I get just the right amt of cheese, and a ton of sauce, and no greasey puddles! <3
I wish I could like anchovies, because I love all other seafood, but they are absolutely, intolerably salty. They straight up burn my mouth, I can't eat them, and they just leave little salt pits when I remove them. Italian sausage is number two, I just hate the taste, and pepperoni is sometimes the same way. I will pick off black olives and artichoke hearts, but they aren't dealbreakers since they don't ruin the pizza by contaminating it with residual flavors even after they're removed, like the others do.
I'm with thescreamqueen - thick and bready crusts ruin it for me!
I ordered a veggie pizza once in Ireland that came topped with the usual - pls corn! That was a pizza dealbreaker, too
I also love anchovies on pizzas! I love anchovies, period.
The list of things that would ruin one for me is very long, starting with a thick, bready crust, closely followed by too much gloppy cheese, if the pizza is too salty, and after that if there are too many toppings. I think more than 3 and the pizza is bound to be soggy.
The simpler, the better.
Soggy crust is the worst for me. I prefer thin crust, but I'm allright with thick too, as long as it's baked thoroughly.
As for toppings, I don't like sausage and salami on my pizza - they are too salty and spicy when baked. Other too salty toppings also ruin the pizza for me.
A crust that is too thick and soft, and I'll refuse to put a piece in my mouth, regardless of the toppings. But I looove a nice thin crust, it's simply perfect.
When it comes to toppings, i definitely have a few don'ts. I've always hated pineapple on pizza, i just don't get what they should be doing there, on top of my pizza. I'm from Denmark, and the type of pizza which has been made and sold the most here is ham and pineapple. Everybody just loves it, and i always find myself picking tiny pieces of pineapple off my pizza, when eating with others. Also, large pieces of bell pepper, eggs and banana are on my black-list.
Agree with the grease comments. That's about the only thing that ruins pizza for me. Never thought about it, but I agree with pepperoni under the cheese. And too much sauce, blech. I'm sorry, but there is no such thing as too much cheese:)
I adore the anchovies, black olives and capers combination. Worst things to plonk on pizzas are minced chicken, crabsticks (kanimaki) and thousand island sauce.
I'm vegan, so I any meat or cheese is a deal breaker. Closely followed by fake cheese. Few things are grosser. I don't understand why people try so hard to recreate meat and cheese, when there are so many great things out there to eat that are amazing without being processed into the shape of a McRib and pitched with some kind of stupid slogan like "Ribz: because legally we can't call them Ribs"
LOVE Pineapple on pizza. HATE pepperoni! Onion is also one of those toppings I have a hard time with. I don't like chewing on raw onion with pizza. And I completely agree with the grease hate. I won't even eat the pizza if I see pools of grease.
