We came across this salad green at the Ferry Plaza Farmer's Market last weekend, and we'd never seen it before.
It's known as Red Orach, Saltbush, or German Mountain Spinach. It's native to Mediterranean regions and is used as a salad green, and is also eaten cooked. We haven't tried it, so we don't know how it tastes. Have you tried it? How was it?

That looks so cool! I haven't seen it in our markets here... Heidi Swanson used it in her Ravioli Pasta Salad Recipe (which I love), so I'd definitely try it if I could get my hands on some.
Red Orach is a lovely, bright plant to grow - adds so much to the visual appearance of a veg patch! It is also great eating - we've had loads of the smaller leaves picked fresh for salads. You can cook it like green spinach and it keeps its great crimson/purple colour - might be a useful addition of Borscht to keep the beetroot colour.
I'd recommend growing it if you can!
