At the start of this spring, we planted mesclun mix seeds in one of our container gardens outside. It's been about 4 weeks now, and here's where we are:We planted the seeds in a deep, broad galvanized tub. The dirt is about 6" from the rim of the tub, but the greens still get plenty of sunlight because of the width of the tub. We have lots of rabbits around, so we're pretty sure that extra depth has been our saving grace.
Mesclun's name is from the Provençal mescla, "to mix", literally meaning mixture. Traditionally, mesclun includes equal proportions of chervil, arugula, leafy lettuces and edive.
It should take about 45 days for our mesclun to be completely salad-ready, meaning we have just a little more waiting to do. Have you planted any mesclun or other salad greens this season? How far along are you?
