At the start of this spring, we planted mesclun mix seeds in one of our container gardens outside. It's been about 4 weeks now, and here's where we are:
We planted the seeds in a deep, broad galvanized tub. The dirt is about 6" from the rim of the tub, but the greens still get plenty of sunlight because of the width of the tub. We have lots of rabbits around, so we're pretty sure that extra depth has been our saving grace.
Mesclun's name is from the Provençal mescla, "to mix", literally meaning mixture. Traditionally, mesclun includes equal proportions of chervil, arugula, leafy lettuces and edive.
It should take about 45 days for our mesclun to be completely salad-ready, meaning we have just a little more waiting to do. Have you planted any mesclun or other salad greens this season? How far along are you?

I don't get to plant anything-no outdoor space. I get to live vicariously through those of you who do! Your mesclun looks great!!!!
I planted mine about 6 weeks ago when the weather was still freezing, and I started harvesting large quantities last week. It's currently growing very fast, so anything I pick seems to be more than replenished overnight.
I planted some seed in a 3' by 3' raised box, and another batch in a planter. The mesclun in the box is noticeably taller than what is in the planter, so next year I think I'm going to plant only in the box outside.
Mine have been in the ground for seven weeks and we are munching away like rabbits, sweet, bitter wonderful lettuces.
Nice job on the beautiful lettuce, love the colors! Mine has been ready to eat for just over a week now. I actually think I will have to share with friends or neighbors because it's quite a bit!
Our microgreens are ready to harvest and I'm psyched!
I had my first salad from the box on my deck last Thursday, and I could have another big one today. Yum.
My microgreens didn't fare too well, but i have some HUGE cucumber plants and lots of tomato plants and hot pepper plants. I also have spearmint, cilantro, oregano, strawberries, parsley, and a grown jalapeno plant. We used some of the jalapenos last night on banh mi.
We're expecting snow tonight.
*harumph*
ate some of our butter lettuce greens tonight...so good!
strawberries are getting closer now too...
I just ate my first set of greens last night! It was my first time growing anything in a container and have 3 things growing- some sort of gourmet lettuce mix, bright lights swiss chard, and some kind of asian greens. They all look pretty messy in the container, but it was my first experience growing and I'm quite pleased.
Just planted my first veggie ever this weekend...chard, in a large pot. It was a pre-sprouted one. I just have a teensy deck and not even a lot of sun, but it is very happy! I am so excited to eat from it, even if it doesn't produce a lot.
