Cheese Alert! There's a new cheese depot downtown, called Saxelby Cheesemongers (great name!). It operates out of a little stall in the Essex Street Market on the Lower East Side.
Anne Saxelby, who is an alum of Murray's Cheese is the sunshine-smiled proprietor. She sells almost entirely farmstead cheese, many from New York State. In addition to cheese, she also sells crème fraîche and butter.
This month, in honor of the shop's opening, all cheeses are 10% for the month of May. Now there's some incentive to head downtown.

Anne is great, friendly and informative. And there is the Essex Cheese Shop a few stalls down from hers that sells the best French Comte in town. Well worth the trip!
My first visit to Saxelby Cheesemongers has turned me into a life-long fan! I was greatly impressed by Anne's vast knowledge of the cheese world, added to Anne's exceptionally warm personality that is so rarely found in Manhattan. I will definitely be making weekly visits to this wonderful new establishment!
This is a wonderful place to enjoy Annes discoveries of GREAT CHEESES... we asked for a sample of favorites and left with four of our new favorites... Lots of personality and JOI DE VIVre comes along with top shelf products. We'll be back often!!!
The presentation and marketing was much like other great cheese places that are popular right now but they only sell American cheese.
I visited this weekend and went home with a piece of something that tasted like plastic. Disappointing...but the cupcakes at Sugar Sweet Sunshine are always a hit when entertaining.
This is a fine niche cheesemonger, specializing in American artisanal cheeses. You will get great service and extensive knowledge about the products they purvey. Can't be beat if you are downtown!
