We've really been digging industrial materials repurposed in the kitchen lately. Which brings us to a detail you might often find on construction sites, but rarely under the countertop: Sawhorses!
While we've seen plenty of sawhorses used for dining tables or desks, they can also be used at a slightly taller dimension for kitchen islands! We love their casual vibe and the way they really loosen up a room.
What do you think? Would sawhorses work in your kitchen?

Straw Mat from The ...

Can't help but think of all the flour, food, etc that will get caught in that bark. Talk about attracting critters to your kitchen. Looks great but reminds me of the type of kitchen you see in those 'designer' houses designed by someone who doesn't cook....looks great but would anyone really cook there or eat there?
My father is a carpenter, so we had several old, wooden sawhorses at home. We did use them for setting up buffets or picnic tables occasionally, but only outdoors. I can't even imagine using them for a somewhat permanent indoor task. The reason they worked so well for picnics is because the tables could be easily taken down, with all the components quickly returning to their day jobs.
Oh, and I totally agree with ccp mbd. The example looks way too staged. That amazing collection of wooden spoons and knife blocks looks interesting, but I could never efficiently use such a space. It looks like something out of catalogliving.net.
I love the sawhorse as legs look but I can't help thinking of the hundreds of times I'm sure to stub my toes on them.
