I remember the first time I noticed my mom sprinkling salt over her watermelon before eating. I was flabbergasted! What in the world was she doing to ruin the perfect summer fruit? Turns out, she was on to something. Read on for more fruit seasonings that will literally change the way you taste fruit!
Winne Young over at Gilt Taste put together a primer on seasoning fruit this week. It's the perfect time to think about this because it gives an excuse to serve fruit just as it is, with a touch of seasoning. What better way to showcase the season?
Young presents several recipes, including one that I'm dying to try: strawberries with matcha salt. This salt and green tea combination adds a slightly bitter and salty flavor to fresh ripe strawberries.
Do you salt and season your fruit?

Mango sprinkled with chili powder and lime juice. Divine!!
Divine, indeed, lovesitc1!
And lime or lemon juice sprinkled on papaya. A big flavor POW.
I buy something similar to this at a supermarket nearby that carries a lot of "international" products:

salted fresh pineapple. i was skeptical when served it but yum.
Fresh strawberries dunked in sour cream (stay with me) and then dunked in brown sugar.
SO good. Great aunt and mom taught me that one.
The black sesame seed and green tea mixtures that Gilt taste suggests, along with many others, are available in asian markets as "furikkake" or rice seasoning. Furikkake is excellent for providing savory flavor to fruit (especially satsume!) Also, a ground powder of 3 parts salt to 1 part Szechuan Peppercorns makes sweet flavors shine.
love sea salt on cantaloupe and sometimes honeydew
I'm with Tee-Bone - it sounds odd but is fantastic.
I'm a cantaloupe salter. I also like lime on my honeydew.
Watermelon salter over here (add a little lime and I'm in Heaven.) A little OT, but there's a salad I made last summer with cantaloupe, bacon, and arugula that was out. of. this. world. I rarely think of adding fruit to salads, but it works so well. I also want to try adding a bit of mango to an omelet with sausage and roasted red peppers!
i love cantaloupe and bacon!
I will not eat cantaloupe without a sprinkling of salt. I also like sliced tomatoes (a fruit) with a sprinkling of granulated sugar. My wife thinks I am weird.
My dad always ate some salt on his apples. I eat mine that way sometimes too.
Best piece of fruit I have eaten in my entire life was pineapple roasted with lavender and black peppercorns. It was spicy, floral and the roasting takes away a lot of the pineapple bite. It was amazing!
A little bit of salt on most fresh citrusy-tangy tropical fruits: oranges, mandarins, limes, grapefruits, melons, pineapples, papaya, hog plums (jocotes), guavas, etc.
I've always thought of salting fruit as a sort of "old-timey" summertime thing, but once I started doing it, I realized my older relatives were on to something. :) Agree with everyone's ideas here. Salted pork product and melon or other sweet fruit is always a big hit here in my house.
@Tee-Bone: what an intriguing idea! I'll have to try that one! I can kinda get how the combo of flavors and textures would work--I'm looking forward to trying it!
Yes, Tee-Bone's right. That is a FANTASTIC treat. Sum is wayy greater than its parts...
My dad will have strawberries sprinkled with freshly ground black pepper and anisette for dessert.
An Indian friend introduced me to cinnamon on pineapple. It's the best thing ever! Even my 3yo agrees :)
I can only stomach papaya with lime. Or lime with pretty much everything.
Also, tomatoes with sugar. Watermelon and feta. Strawberries and balsamic vinegar.
Sour cream or Greek yogurt mixed with brown sugar or turbinado sugar is the most fantastic sauce for any berry....strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, I did it on boysenberries last week.
Mint works well with melons and stone fruit. Really well. Salt on melon and figs...yeah. Bleu cheese and figs is the best, THE BEST. Wrap with a thin piece of prosciutto and die from the bliss.
Hey, don't you remember a staple of Italian cuisine, "melone with prosciutto": it mixes the saltiness of the prosciutto with the sweetness of the melon. There's even a Spanish version with jamón serrano (but you don't really need the ultra-expensive one for this)
Strawberries with smoked salt, so weird, but so good!
Salted mango!
My best friend growing up always ate her apples with a salt shaker in hand. Every bite got a little sprinkle first...at 10 years old!!
I made a vanilla bean salt this summer and have been sprinkling it on apples. ohh lala.
