Ever thought about eating salad for breakfast? Or sushi? No? Here are five unexpected yet surprisingly good breakfasts, gathered from around the world!
- Salad - Yes, a breakfast salad! I love eating avocado with prosciutto and a little Parmesan in the summertime. Add a poached egg and it's a seriously nutritious meal. Many Asian breakfasts often include salad, too — why not try it sometime?
- Miso Soup - Nearly every Japanese breakfast includes miso soup. It's healthy and savory, and a wonderfully filling way to start the day.
- Rice - While I love heating up a bit of leftover rice with cinnamon and milk for breakfast, this dish of flattened rice, or poha, takes it one step further. Throughout much of Asia and parts of Africa, rice is an important part of breakfast, and this quick-cooking flattened rice is one of my favorite breakfast dishes from India.
- Uncooked Oats & Grains - Oatmeal and other porridges need to be cooked, right? Not necessarily! Swiss muesli, uncooked oats left overnight in water or milk with chopped fruit, is a deliciously easy breakfast. I love even steel-cut oats done this way; they're chewy and nutty.
- Sushi - Sushi may be the last thing in the world you would think of for breakfast, but really — why not try it? It seems like a great make-ahead, grab-and-go breakfast. Wrap up ham, chopped cucumber, and herbs in rice. Grab a roll on your way out the door!
What are some of the more unexpected things you eat for breakfast? Are there any breakfast items from your culture or home country that would seem unusual to Western cooks?

I very often make a pseudo-fried rice for breakfast. Scrambled egg, veggies, rice, a splash of soy sauce. So good.
I just love congee or rice porridge, eaten all over asia for breakfast. I keep a pot of plain rice soup in the fridge and each morning I add chopped marinated chicken, garlic, fresh herbs, mushrooms etc and heat up 1 portion on the stove top. It's filling without being heavy. And very economical. 1 cup of rice is more than enough for a week worth of breakfast.
I love egg noodles seasoned with condiments like soy sauce, oyster sauce, fish sauce, and sesame oil.. mixed with with last night's leftover meat / veg.. and topped with diced green onion and fried shallots. YUM. It sounds like a lot of ingredients but it really only takes 10-15 mins.
i regularly eat cucumber rolls for breakfast. they're refreshing.
I have been known to eat sushi or salad for breakfast, rice or rice cakes. Actually, I will eat just about any leftover, though I am not usually hungry in the morning. I never ate breakfast as a child because I did not like boxed cereal, oatmeal or waffles.
in hawaii we have musubi for breakfast a lot. it's kind of like an uncut maki roll... my favorite is teriyaki chicken. deeeelicious. fatter than most makis, though. more rice. and slightly warmed.
oh, and rice too. all the time!
even ramen.
Swiss muesli is amazing. I like to squeeze some lemon on mine and add a bit of honey- SO good.
I love that poached egg, avocado, and tomato salad. I can't wait until tomatoes are in season, eating it with tasteless winter tomatoes is a waste of the other ingredients. I go ghetto with my salty meat and use Lebanon Bologna because it's kind of a staple in my house anyway.
