Product: Midnight Scoop
First Look: This is an ergonomic, heavy-duty ice cream scoop that's built to dig through hard ice cream and last for a lifetime.
I'm serious about my ice cream. However, there was a period of time in my early 20s when I was a lazy ice cream scooper. I would pull the container from the freezer and use my spoon as a spear to carve out pieces of hard ice cream. Not surprisingly, this resulted in a lot of bent spoons.
I eventually moved on to ice cream scoopers, and most recently was thrilled to take the Midnight Scoop, which is like the Ferrari of ice cream scoopers, for a test ride.
Midnight Scoop: A Quick Summary
Characteristics and specs: The unique shape and curved handle sets this scoop apart from the rest. It helps you to use your arm and chest muscles to dig into the ice cream instead of using your weaker wrists. It gives you more power and leverage to cut through hard ice cream.
Favorite details: The curved handle with finger grooves on the underside take some of the pressure off your wrist when scooping hard ice cream. It feels easier and a little less awkward than a standard straight handle. I also love how sturdy this scooper feels.
Potential problems: It's recommended that this scooper be washed by hand rather than by a spin through the dishwasher. The price tag is also pretty steep.
Who would love this? Anyone who has a serious thing for ice cream and a soft spot for gadgets and kitchen toys that make everyday tasks easier.
My Review of Midnight Scoop
The first thing I noticed about my Midnight Scoop wasn't actually the scoop itself, but the sleek box and packaging it was delivered in — quite impressive for an ice cream scoop. And rightly so, because this is no ordinary ice cream scoop. Actually it's like no ice cream scoop I've ever seen or used before.
The weight of the The Midnight Scoop was surprising to me. It's heavy compared to other scoopers, but in a way that feels strong, sturdy, and reassuring. It made me feel confident about the prospect of tackling a container of hard ice cream.
The defining element of this tool is by far the handle. It's long and curved — more narrow up top near the scoop and wider at the bottom. The curved handle is a unique feature that allows you to use your arm rather than wrist when scooping ice cream. The length of the scoop is ideal for tall containers, while it's also narrow enough to make its way round smaller pint containers.
Tackling rock-hard ice cream still felt tough, although I didn't feel the same pressure around my wrist as I felt with a standard ice cream scoop. The finger grooves on the underside of the scoop made me feel like I had a better grip, and the pointed tip of the scoop proved helpful.
It is pricey, but at the end of the day, this tool makes a nice scoop of ice cream.
