Do you use jarred pasta sauce? End up with glass jars that seem they should be able to do something more? Here are a few ideas for giving them a second wind (and making your house look kinda neat, too!):
- Use them for bulk storage.
- Use spray-on etching to frost the glass and use them as candlholders, indoors or out.
- Give them a pattern with a paint pen like Abby at Aesthetic Outburst.
- Crochet them some cozies and use them for pretty storage at the bedside, desktop, or table. You can even give them as gifts! See a tutorial at Dottie Angel.

I have some that I currently use for storing grains and other bulk pantry items. Always a good reminder to use re-purpose what you have.
I reuse them all the time..but I dont buy sauces aymore, so no more new bottles to add to the collection. :( . They can also be used as a flower vase, and for emptying half open canned beans, canned tomatoes, condensed milk etc.
My husband uses them for ice tea because they are bigger than any of our glasses. Since the tea stains/leaves deposits on glassware, I let him have his "tea glasses".
I find that anything that has had something acidic in it- tomato sauce, salsa, pickles- is difficult to get 'clean smelling' without a trip or two through the dishwasher.
I compulsively save my glass peanut butter jars (which, as they are greasy, are a different cleaning problem) and use them to store grains, sugar, etc in my pantry. I found a treasure trove of OLD wire bail mason jars in the last apartment I lived, so those are my 'on display' storage jars.
i want to save my jars but they never look as pretty as this when they come out of the dishwasher. they typically still have some of the label/glue stuck on their side and the tops are covered with branding. anyone have cleaning and brand covering tips?
I have an entire cabinet stacked with jars to use. We use them for homemade nut milks, bulk storage, drinks, etc.
Usually, labels and glue will come off under (really) hot water (I used wine bottles as centerpieces for my wedding...I boiled and scrubbed a LOT of bottles...).
The more tenacious ones come off in a flash if you use a dot of Goo Gone and let it sit for a minute or so (I don't know how eco-friendly Goo Gone is, but the stuff works so well I'm reluctant to try and replace it!).
As for the branding? You got me on that one. And that's exactly why I don't save my pasta-jar glass. :P
I use an old pasta sauce jar to hold homemade dishwasher detergent. There's a nice wide mouth, which makes it easy to scoop or pour the powder.
I save every container that ever comes into my house. :) I use jars for leftovers, frequently. They also make great storage containers for other things.
i use them to store my dry pantry goods, and for room-temperature- or refrigerator-safe vinegar and olive oil preservations [like oven-dried tomatoes or roasted red peppers].
i also make my yogurt in them, and fit them with cheese cloth and a canning ring for sprouting beans.
as i continue to replace dry packaged goods, i find these jars are excellent storage!
oh yeah, and i've given food and drink gifts in them too. for the holidays, i made an infused vodka last year, and packed each with fresh fruit in jars, wrapping the top in cloth & string.
if you mix up your own loose tea concoctions, they are great packaging for giving those, too.
i like to store all the grains, leftover soup, use for a vase. I use them and my mason jars depending on size.
I use pasta sauce jars to hold knitting needles. They're great for holding things. Lots of things.
Or just make your own pasta sauce. What's next, buying toasted bread?
yes! I use them all the time. I use them for bulk storage in the kitchen, craft supplies (buttons!) and in the bathroom for items like cotton balls, etc.
I also like to wrap sections in jute for pretty, natural vases. This is nice for covering up those stubborn areas that you can't get clean.
I can't believe I've thrown these out (recycled, at least). I love creative and thoughtful people!
But I was afraid there wouldn't be a "just make your own X" post! I need to invent a comment section bingo. ;)
Today I found out that the Classico brand sauce has a label that's made to come off. I soaked it in warm water and it actually fell away, leaving no residue. And the jar has words and measurements embossed (or however you say shaped into glass) in the sides!
