Relish by Daphne Oz
Quick Facts
• Who wrote it: Daphne Oz
• Who published it: HarperCollins
• Number of recipes: Over 50
• Recipes for right now: Whole Wheat Blueberry Sticky Buns, Moroccan Lentil Soup with Sweet Potato, Grapefruit Thyme Spritz, Chile Jam Chicken, Strawberry Cake with Caramel Fleur de Sel
• Other highlights: This book does something very clever: instead of jamming all the longer writing pieces into an intro chapter, it intersperses these conversation points throughout the book. After the breakfast chapter, we stumble into an essay on stocking the pantry with healthy, wholesome ingredients and deciphering grocery store jargon. Between the chapter on cocktails and the one on dinner, Daphne shares her ideas on finding your personal decorating style and how to throw a stress-free party. I admit to being a “skipper,” as in I usually skip straight to the recipes, and I really appreciate how these sections slowed me down and caught my interest. I enjoyed hearing Daphne’s perspecive.
The recipes also sound totally delicious. Those Whole Wheat Blueberry Sticky Buns in the slideshow above? I will be stalking the farmers’ market until the first blueberries show up. This recipe is a great example of how Daphne balances wholesome with the occasional indulgence. Her recipes focus on making healthy fare for your table, but often have a little something rich thrown in so you don’t forget to love every bite.
• Who would enjoy this book? Fans of Daphne Oz, for sure. Also, anyone looking for some inspiration for flavorful, yet wholesome, dishes to add to their line-up. I think this book would be especially useful if you’ll be setting up your first apartment in the next few months — or if you want to give your current kitchen and living space a make-over.
