You have to ARM yourself for afternoon snack attack. I bring six triscuits (I have to apportion them or else I'll eat the whole box), a jar of V8 with some hot sauce in it, and a little pot of olives. In the afternoon I find I want strong salty flavors, but if I want sweet, I turn to fruit leather or a piece of chocolate. A yogurt or some pineapple mid-day also helps me to push lunch back, which helps curb the snack attack.
Well, I always have a variety of snacks, from fruit cups to wasabi peas to granola bars, in my office for just such moments experienced by me or my co-workers. However, sometimes all I need is a little something -- like a small piece of dark chocolate and some tea -- to get me through the rest of the day.
I have phases of snacks, but it's a challenge to eat something healthy mid afternoon, popcorn, an apple, tea and a piece of dark chocolate, sometimes i save a bit of my lunch for later...
To make the most out of things I usually go for a fresh green vegetable, like celery or peppers, with leftover rice or beans - basically anything with a bit of a protein boost that i could scoop up with the vegetables. Generally something like this adds a fresh and nice break when my workday is largely spent in front of the computer.
I try to stick to a handful of trail mix in the afternoon if I can, but if I can hold out I go home and have my favorite post-work, pre-dinner snack of some avocado on top of a wheat crispbread and sprinkled with sea salt. Crackers with hummus work anytime, too.
My faves:
-Eating an apple alternated with bites of sharp cheddar
-TJ's wasabi rice crackers
-Tofurky Jurky
-Tamari almonds
-tiny grape tomatoes
-Hershey's Extra Dark chunk
-Typhoo tea
My not-so-faves that I end up with anyway:
-stupid baby carrots (soooooo burnt out on baby carrots)
-trail mix (been eating GORP since childhood, sigh)
-anything dipped into grocery store hummus
-bananas (sometimes made better schmeared with PB)
i like a handful of emerald nuts to keep robert goulet from coming in and messing with my stuff. :)
