We've gotten our second dose of the annual winter cold and aside from being curled up on the couch watching movies all day, we need to make some solid feel better soup. Here are the ones we plan on making until this cold vacates our body.
When we're sick, we love the magical spell that hot soup seems to put on our body. Besides temperature hot, we also love heat (a great way to clear any head congestion) which is why we recommend Rutabaga Chipotle Soup and Hot and Sour Mushroom, Cabbage and Rice Soup.
Aside from heat, we also like hearty soups that are filled with seasonal vegetables. Fresh vegetables can work wonders on the common cold &mdash we recommend staying clear of canned soups when you're feeling under the weather (if not always), which is why we suggest Pomegranate Lentil Soup and Minestrone Soup, Full of Leafy Greens.

Martha Concrete Lam...

I made this yesterday minus the meat.
I tweaked it with fresh gremolata - was very good

I made a big pot of the Hot and Sour Mushroom, Cabbage and Rice Soup last week when coincidentally, the bf came home with a cold. We have both been enjoying the soup since. (He is doing much better now) It really is delicious!
I just published a post on my blog about my grandmother's feel better soup. That's actually what we called it as kids!

On days like this I crave French Onion Soup with a nice crouton and gooey cheese. Here is a super-easy recipe: http://bit.ly/6xZeos
Chicken and vegetable! With real, skin-on, bone-in chicken flavoring the broth and lots and LOTS of veggies like carrots, potatoes, onions, celery, greens, tomatoes, corn, and sometimes green beans in the mix. Soooo good. And always makes me feel better, slurping the clear broth or sopping it up with good fresh bread from the bakery.
I'm not so big on spice myself, but a little salsa in a black bean, tomato, corn, collards, and chicken soup is also nice.
When I feel like absolute hell the last thing I want to do is cook, so my feel-better soup is super easy to put together. Broth, a medium sized potato cut into big chunks, whole garlic cloves, and a jalepeno pepper. Cook until everything is soft then blend with an immersion blender. Once I feel a bit better I go for spicy tom kha from the local Thai place.
Thai soups really help with respiratory illnesses. All those sharp, green flavors. Or a big bowl of pho will clear out congestion.
For digestive ailments I recommend making a cup of miso soup. It always seems to soothe an upset tum.
Austrian garlic soup.
Miso ginger soup.
I have a chicken soup that my friends call the witch's brew soup, it heals everything.
I love chicken soup with rice (wild rice, brown rice & red rice) and Carole King singing Maurice Sendak's Chicken Soup with Rice in the background.
