Sometimes all it takes to satisfy our sweet tooth is a chewy, sticky square of crispy rice cereal and melted marshmallow. We love rice krispie treats as much today as we did when we were kids! The original recipe will always be a classic, but here are a few twists in case you're in the mood for something new.
1. Coconut-Pecan Cereal Bars from Martha Stewart - We can't wait to take these on picnics this summer.
2. Salted Brown Butter Crispy Treats from Smitten Kitchen - Nearly the original recipe, but with the grown-up flavor of browned butter.
3. Peanut Butter Krispy Treats from 101 Cookbooks - Made with maple syrup and toasted pistachios!
4. Caramel Macadamia Rice Crispie Treats from Epicurious - We might drizzle these with some dark chocolate to cut the sweetness.
5. Mexican Chocolate Rice Krispie Treats from Big Sis Lil Sis - Spiked with cinnamon, pecans, and mini chocolate chips!
And just in case you need a refresher!

Yum, yum, yumyumyum
omg, browned butter ricekrispies are AMAZING.
Mmm, I like my rice crispy treats made with Golden Grahams rather than Rice Crispies. Sooo good.
I like to melt a big scoop of peanut butter with a bag of chocolate chips and spread that on the top. Kind of boring, but Love the PB&Choco with the crunch and 'mallow of the treats!
Is there a particular brand of vegetarian/vegan marshmallows I should look for? I'm not vegan, but I am strict about not consuming gelatin. I had no idea I would miss Rice Krispie Treats until... right now, but MAN, am I craving them!
This post came at the perfect time...I stopped by the grocery store on my way home last night to pick up a box of rice krispies because I had a sudden urge to make these delicious treats!
Don't know where the craving came from, but I'm excited for the weekend to make some of these babies.

I pretty much live on Deb's Salted Brown Butter version (smittenkitchen). Good lord. I need to go make some of those right now.
Love to make them with cheerios instead and add dried cranberries or cherries. (Everyday Food recipe) Really, really good. I also thought the simple addition of walnuts to the traditional RKT was pretty genius too.
anyone know where I can buy puffed brown rice to use in these?
AmieBarber8, I don't know how you feel about eggs, but the recipe works with marshmallow fluff plus a dash of cornstarch. Not QUITE the same texturally, but it passes muster for cravings. You may want to buy an extra jar, as the second co-vivants see this in your pantry, there will be an urgent need for Fluff-r-nutters, fudge, or pecans dunked in the stuff.
It's not gourmet, but when I want to teach the meaning of "gilding the lily" without referencing Jennifer Love Hewitt, I make "Igor Bars"--- chocolate chip cookies in bar form with Rice Krispie treats glued to them by a thin layer of caramel, then encrusted with various candies and toppings (I use mini M & M's plus Reeses Pieces and fruit-flavored Jelly Bellies or chopped sour worms. This is considered "restrained" by the standards of those who make or indulge in them).

We've always made ours with melted caramel (with some water) instead of marshmellows, and butterscotch and semisweet chocolate morsels sprinkled on top. Bake them for 5 minutes or just until the morsels start to get melted, then take them out and smooth the morsels with a knife. Easy and delicious. We always called them Kissy Brownies when we were growing up.
Traditional recipe with a handful of oatmeal added has a good flavor.
This is an old trick, but use the strawberry flavored marshmallows (or regular ones, plus some strawberry flavoring or maybe even puree). My grandmother used to do this, and they are really good.
Hi! Thanks so much for including our Mexican Chocolate Rice Krispie Treats in this story! They were lots of fun to make and even more delicious! We love the other ideas you featured as well.
Thanks again, we really appreciate it!

When I was in high school I created an "energy bar" for a science project that was like a cross between a granola bar and a rice krispie treat. You boil sugar and corn syrup, stir in peanut butter and either chocolate chips or cocoa mix (I actually like Swiss Miss cocoa mix in this recipe the best) and then stir it into a mixture of granola and rice krispies. When I'm feeling particularly healthy I mix some wheat germ into the dry mix and you can't taste it. Then you either lay out the whole mess in a pan, cool and cut it or you can dollop it onto parchment paper to make little cookies. It's super fattening but amazingly delicious. We called them "Study Buddies."
Yum. These sound great - I will try some of these recipes next time I make them.
I just did one with Almond Butter, honey and wheat germ for a healthy alternative - I also used half the marshmallows. My daughter loved them!

I did a twist on them too! I used caramel swirl marshmallows, cocoa krispy cereal, and added drizzled caramel and mini chocolate chips! Here's my post about it.
Agreed with the mention of golden grahams and will also suggest cinnamon toast crunch as an additional cereal that works well.
Years ago we took those little minicereal boxes - sold as multipacks - and made them all into cereal treats to test which flavors were the best.
This is a fun activity to do with kids although there will be sugar high induced chaos afterward.
I'm a fan of using Kashi Go Lean for serious crunch & I add TONS of dried fruit (strawberries are my favorite).
I must be a purist because the thought of ANY change to the original recipe is appalling to me.
Except for the browned butter recipe. I have a serious browned butter addiction.
I just developed a marriage of Krispies with the classic chocolate and peanut butter "trash." They are decadent, chewy, crunchy, gooey...so good!
