I can't remember where I first heard about this snazzy line of cocktail bitters
from The Bitter Truth, but I'm glad I did. Grapefruit bitters? Chocolate bitters? Maybe we can't afford ambergris
, but we can certainly still bring some bling to our cocktails. In addition to the classic aromatic bitters, The Bitter Truth carries seven other kinds of bitters: orange, lemon, celery, grapefruit, chocolate, Jerry Thomas bitters, and Creole bitters. All are based off of old pre-Prohibition recipes that have long since faded from home bars and barrooms alike.
Just reading this list makes me itch to throw a cocktail party. Bitters are never usually the main ingredient in a cocktail, but they're that little sumpin' sumpin' that makes you smile after taking a sip. They're added to give cocktails nuance and depth, a little punch of flavor that you'd miss if it weren't there.
The website for The Bitter Truth has plenty of cocktail recipes to try and a search engine to locate the store nearest you that carries their bitters:
