I'm convinced that you can find anything there if you look hard enough: dried mushrooms for risotto tonight, that weird spice no one else has heard of, a cookie to revive your weary soul. It's a magical place. In this new book of recipes, tips, and stories, Jess Thomson has perfectly captured both this magic and the very spirit of Pike Place Market. What's your story of Pike Place Market?
The first time I visited Pike Place Market, I was fresh out of college and barely knew how to cook a pot of rice. The market was overwhelming to me and I walked around in a wide-eyed daze. At every twisty turn, someone was offering me a sample of soup or encouraging me to try the strawberries that day or gesturing me into their spice shop.
But, and I'm not kidding here, I can trace some of my first culinary stirrings back to that inaugural visit to Pike Place Market. I had no idea that food could be like this: something vibrant and alive and exciting. What really overwhelmed me on that first visit wasn't so much the market, but the possibilities that I never knew existed before.

This looks like an amazing book! I live in Seattle but don't go to the market often because it can be REALLY crowded, but as this seems to focus on locally available foods it would be handy regardless. Thanks for posting!

Oh I love Pike Place. Growing up, it was such a treat to get to go to SEATTLE and go to the market to get Hum Bao and flowers and all sorts of delights. I lived just a couple blocks away from it recently, and I loved hitting up the produce stalls on my walk home to get ingredients for dinner, and it was wonderful on weeknights when it was nearly empty. Weekends can be fun too, but a little too crowded for me! I haven't been for so long, though, I really miss Pike Place!
Oh, Pike Place is always my first and favorite stop in Seattle. I love finding all kinds of delicious treasures, but my very favorite part is gorging on Beecher's Cheese!!
My first job out of college was in an office located at the market. I remember our storage area was in the sub basement, on the same floor as a bakery's kitchen. Getting into the freight elevator at market level wasn't so pleasant because it was near the garbage, but getting off the elevator down below smelled soooo good.
It was my favorite "get away from my office and walk around" lunch spot for years. I loved stopping at (the old) Matt's for a drink after work (mind you, this was also when Wild Ginger was still down below the market.) Hmmm... now I want a piroshky, too.
I may just pick up this cookbook!
