- What makes your small kitchen so cool?
- When we decided not to take down a wall to merge the kitchen and dining room, it gave us the chance to get creative with cabinet and counter space.
- Describe a challenge you've overcome or a smart resource you've found for your kitchen.
- The biggest challenge was working with the original features of the kitchen, the same features that became our favorite parts of the space. Restoring the cabinets and hardwood floors took the most time and effort but were the most rewarding (note: sticky floor tiles do not age well!)
- What's your favorite meal to cook here?
- Homemade pizza. We can get the toppings from the refrigerator, rinse and chop them at the sink, roll the dough on the counter, and pop it in the over to bake, all while standing in the same spot.

Very lovely!
Beautiful use of space!!
Just wonderful! I love the "counter" that you put in on either side of your oven.
Very well done, and maintains the spirit of the house.
How beautiful! I love the layout and finishes you chose. Are those built-in hotpads on either side of the stove?
@KAYN, The hotpads are standalone metal trivets from Ikea, super simple and a must-have for wood countertops.
@ SunnyBlue, Thanks! We wanted to keep as much original as possible. After finishing most of the renovations we found the original blueprints from 1937. We were happy to see that the original details for the cabinets and layout are the nearly the same now as when it was originally built.
What did you use for the backsplash? I love the simplicity, and it still seems to have a great luminous sheen.
Beautiful kitchen. I'm noticing a trend in the entries--wood counter tops. I'm intrigued, partially because I haven't see a lot of those up until now, and because I am using them in my kitchen redesign, too.
I've asked the same question of a couple of the other recent entrants--are you oiling your countertops, or are they coated with polyurethane or something similar?
@DD Lizzy, They are Ikea FASTBO. It took some customization, but they work well, and surprisingly don't show splashes, fingerprints, etc.
@THERAPIZEME, We use linseed oil. A light sanding and oiling twice a year keeps them looking good, and gets rid of scratches/stains that inevitably build up.
kudos for restoring instead of demolishing where you could
excellent job preserving the original kitchen cabinets! well done!
is the IKEA sink holding up? i'm considering it for my bungalow kitchen re-do on a budget.
@BERKELEY.LOVES.GREY, Yes, we are one year in, and it is doing great. Easy to clean, etc. We did had a hard time finding a sink mat that fit, and eventually hacked an Ikea dish rack to do that job. All and all we love it.
Excellent and beautiful work - such creative use of the space! Do you do consultant work?
@FERRIS WHEEL, Thanks! It's a labor of love, too many other projects in the house to think about a different house; we can only give advice: don't always try to start from scratch and find fun ways to make things your own.
very well done with such a small space - a lovely kitchen and one anyone would be proud/happy to cook in :-)
This kitchen is stunning and very functional though small. Love it!!!
I like the idea of not having to burn any calories while preparing a meal by not having to move around at all. I think you are on to something regarding dinner efficiency that should catch on quickly. I assume that you can cut down the time it takes to prepare meals by 40% or so?
Where is Sawyer?
I like the cabinets and that before floor was a disaster.
Patrick----Are you happy with your refrigerator? I'd love to get a 24" but have seen mixed reviews on the few standalone options out there.
Love the cabinets!
By far the most amazing thing about this is that you can sweep next to your stove! I've always hated the mystery area where food collects on cracks betweens stoves and counters.... excellent thinking.
@SLOVSL, We do love the fridge, not as small as your would think inside (plus it has an ice maker). It is a Summit, model FFBF285SSIM (27" wide). The most important part was that is was shallow enough to not stick out past the counters. Combined with a basement deep freeze there is plenty of room for everything.
love it. so well done! and glad to hear about that ikea sink I was eyeballing it.
What I would do to have this kitchen! It's so great!
This is very similar to the kitchen in my new (old) house and I'm having the same inclination not to tear down the wall between the kitchen and dining room. I have been considering how to restore the vintage cabinets but still customize and update the kitchen; your success makes me feel confident!
Lovely kitchen.
Love! Love! Love!
Want to trade:) Really nice space.
I wouldn't change a thing.
I love the compactness of the kitchen & the good use of your space.
Great little kitchen(ette)! Lots of class. You should have seen it before! (Luckily Patrick has a very creative neighbor with alot of tools!) Even so, Patrick and wife (unnamed for privacy) are extremely diligent and creative and GREAT neoighbors!
looks great!
cool
Knobs in the middle of the doors! I feel like I don't see that a lot, but I like it. Also love the light fixture above the sink. Great kitchen.
