Dinner parties can be messy affairs: a wine glass topples over; a small plate of appetizers gets knocked off the coffee table; an enthusiastic guest bumps into the beverage cart. That's what happens sometimes when you gather a group of people together to enjoy some good food and wine. To minimize the stress (and your guest's embarrassment — because, let's face it, we've all been there) here's a handy tip: prep a cleaning kit beforehand to have at the ready for quick cleanups!
The cleaning kit doesn't need to be elaborate. Just put a few things together in a bucket underneath your kitchen sink for easy access should there be a mishap during the party. Here are a few suggestions:
- A sponge or microfiber cloth.
- A roll of paper towels.
- A small container of Oxyclean, or a solution of hydrogen peroxide and Dawn detergent, for wine spills. Another suggestion is to try salt and soda water. See this post and this post for help dealing with red wine spills!
- An all-purpose cleaning solution for table and countertop spills. You could also make your own, as one reader shared with us here: Dissolve 1/2 teaspoon washing soda, 2 teaspoons borax, and 1/2 teaspoon liquid soap into 2 cups of hot water. Put in spray bottle.
- A dust pan and brush.
What other go-to emergency supplies would you add to a party cleaning kit?
