We are discovering more and more that we are drawn to kitchens without upper cabinets. Take a look at this kitchen, for instance. It's so open, so bright, and it flows together so nicely with the adjacent dining room. We could hang out in this kitchen all day long!
We didn't even realize until we had looked at these photos a few times that this kitchen felt so open and light because it didn't have any upper cabinets. This helps it flow more naturally into the dining room, and feel integrated into the rest of the home. It also leaves room for huge banks of windows that let light stream into the kitchen. The owners even tiled the floor with a warm, lovely set of colors and patterns that are meant to echo the feel of an area rug.
The kitchen makes up for the storage it loses up above with ample storage down below, like the smart rail-fronted storage right next to the dishwasher. This holds the family's most commonly used dishware and glasses.
Perhaps I am instinctively drawn to this kind of kitchen because I am quite petite and have a hard time making full use of high cabinets anyway. I would rather have a little extra light and head room, and find creative storage options down below.
What about you? Are you drawn to this style of kitchen? What do you think of this one?

drool....want....love...
Yes- gorgeous.

This kitchen also feels open and light because it is quite large, and because most of the upper cabinet space is bright windows instead of blank walls.
I do like the upper "open shelving" look with a few simple, thick wall shelves.
This kitchen is undeniably beautiful, but those yucky wall sconces need to go!
i've yet to see a regular apartment/condo kitchen that would be that big and well lit. yes, it's nice to have all the storage below, but if, like me, you live in a small space and, what's more, have no plans to "upgrade" to a large space, then it's sort of out of the question. i love the look, but i'll take function any day, and kitchens demand storage.
Love the use of the colored range as a pop of color. Surprised more people don't do that. Everything is all stainless steel now.
Coveting... drool. The Viking range is just... stunning.
Oh my.....
it seems so light and airy because there are big windows on two sides... duhl. my question is without cabinets above, where do you store dishes?
i know, i know, you *could* store them below counter-height, but that just seems wrong to me somehow. and like kids/pets would break them very easily stored there so openly as in the photo.
I like how the room looks more like another room in the house. It looks more relaxed, less busy. It's a great alternative to the industrial-style kitchen. Of course, this could only fly for me if I had a great china hutch in one corner, and maybe even a big (i.e., walk-in) butler's pantry to store all the stuff that would no longer fit in the kitchen.
This is a beautiful kitchen. No question about that. Regarding the third picture: I couldn't store my dishes on an open shelf below the counter - my dog would be "investigating" them! Also, when my son was a toddler he used to empty out the lower cabinets. I put unbreakables where he could reach, not lovely dishes!
I love the bright sunshine, large windows, wide counter tops and white walls in that kitchen!!! Oh, I would give anything to have sunlight streaming in my kitchen while I work. The creative juices would flow. You did a nice job designing the kitchen.
Wow! I love it! I'm tall, and even I still can't use the very top shelf of my upper cabinets. I love all the light and counterspace.
It's beautiful, but I cannot imagine living & cooking here. Bending down all the time to get stuff out of the cabinets? Plates? Serving dishes? Mugs? My arthritic mom couldn't do that every day. And I could do it, but I'd hate it.
I love kitchens without upper cabinets. They look so much more spacious and open and inviting.
i looove it! i think it's also practical, but i'm short and limber, anyway. it's certainly beautiful and BIG (so jealous).
This kitchen is amazing! Lots of light and very functional. My ideal kitchen except for the flooring. But the built in drain board, under mount sink and an working island that is higher than the surrounding counters. Yay! Not to mention counter space below the microwave cabinet for hot dishes. The white cabinets and light counters are refreshing. I love this! I’m trying to talk my husband into a stainless back splash for our stove but we have a built in over the range microwave.
Not sure how that will look. The appliances are stainless so they’d match the back splash but maybe would look too much like a big shiny space in the kitchen?
A good kitchen should be compact so that everything is easily within reach and doesn't require leaving the stove for long to get anything you need.
Overhead cabinets are great for storing cans, pasta, bottles of vinegar, etc...Also for things you use infrequently (for me the party coffee maker, bundt pans, and the turkey roasting pan).
The only pantry items I keep below are spices in a spice drawer.
Drawers can be problematic for seeing labels, and if you are middle aged, the stooping down to see inside cabinets is no fun.
Let the sun shine in if you can, but don't give up your upper cabinets.
ok now THIS is my dream kitchen. look at all that counter space- and it doesnt look so sterile that you are afraid to cook or eat there! oh envy thy name is counter space!
I do like this, but I think it's more about the windows and the uninterrupted, generous runs of counter space than no uppers for me. If it were a similar size space without all the windows, those big blank walls would probably look weird in a kitchen.
I love the dish storage situation, but if for it to be really functional and accessible, those shelves should pull out. As it is it would drive me nuts having to grope around under there.
It is beautiful, but I wouldn't want to have to bend over everytime I needed a fresh glass.
My dream kitchen...sigh...
Being vertically challenged, I cannot use upper cabinets. For easily accessible storage, a spacious pantry would be a must.
Beautiful kitchen, it looks very homely.
I love that on AT, your photos show the lighting. It really gives perspective of what the room actually looks like. Quite a few magazines crop the lighting. Keep up the good work.
AngelaDee76, I think you either mean "homey" or "comely," not "homely." I like the look, and appreciate that the absence of cabinets allows more space for windows. Perhaps if there was at least upper cabinets in some part of the kitchen, or, as aychihuahua points out, a spacious pantry. Otherwise, there's no way I could justify all that empty wall space.
if i had windows like that...i wouldn't even want upper cupboards
and as someone who has no pets, i really like the idea in the 3rd photo. but i would first need to afford a home that's big enough to have a kitchen this size.
