A good sandwich is something we look forward to eating all morning long. The soft bread, the crisp lettuce, maybe a few pieces of good cheese. And of course for us omnivores, the perfectly piled slices of deli meat might just be best part.
I could eat a ham sandwich every day and be perfectly content. I like the slices to be paper-thin so they fold over on themselves in the sandwich and practically melt in my mouth. Honey-roasted is my favorite, though I’ll take black-forest in a pinch.
I’ll also make my own lunch meat whenever I can get my act together to do so. I’ll do cook a pot roast in the slow cooker to make roast beef sandwiches, or thinly slice a few poached chicken breasts to last the week. My mother also cooks a whole chicken in the slow cooker and then pulls the meat for her lunch sandwiches.
What about you?

Bacsac Bacsquare 04...

Well it depends on what I'm in the mood for. A specialty grocer near my home has a deli counter that sells the fresh roasted turkey breast and that is our standard weekday choice. But if I'm feeling more indulgent, pastrami, roast beef or cured meats fit the bill nicely.
Ham has been my go-to luncheon meat as long as I can remember and that will probably never change. I love ham, any kind.
Boars Head Everroast chicken is amazingly tasty and fresh.
Always a huge fan of Boar's Head roasted turkey- thick slices please! Dijon mustard, mayo, lettuce, and some harvarti... Now I know what I'm making for lunch!
Real turkey breast is the best - it's like thanksgiving any day of the year -esp with a side of cranberry sauce.
Every once in a while, I'll get bologna and/or salami.
Bacon. No questions asked.
I go through periods where I am stuck on one kind of deli meat, I went through a LONG turkey period, then a pretty long ham one, and now I'm on roast beef.
Very rare roast beef will always be my favorite.
ohhhhh, the deli back home used to roast little maple hams, fresh from the rotisserie. Whatever they didn't sell hot they sliced and sold as deli meat and it moved heaven and earth. God, a slice of that ham on lightly toasted egg bread, with a slice of Canadian cheddar marbled with maple syrup. To die for. I am kicking myself for not thinking to get some while I was last in town.
My all time favorite is still hard or Genoa salami piled up with a little mayo and lettuce.
In my opinion, nothing beats a good corned beef. I try not to eat it often because it is not great for you but it is my favorite.
I guess it goes without saying that i am NOT talking about the canned kind. Deli sliced only.
Wha? I have to choose?!
My favorites are more about the sandwich as a whole rather than a particular deli meat. So if I had to choose:
- Ham and brie on a crusty buttered baguette
- Rare roast beef with horseradish
- Pastrami on rye, healthy swipe of mustard
- After-Thanksgiving turkey with stuffing and cranberry sauce crammed into a big sandwich. Gravy on the side.
Since I just finished one and it was great, I'll go with pastrami (on dark rye with plenty of mustard). Perfectly beefy, smoky and spicy.
I have to vote for salami in a sandwich with thinly sliced fennel bulb and arugula, top it off with spicy mustard. ooh now I just want sandwiches for dinner.
But what I really love is some ground meat (meatballs, pâtés, confits, rilletes, sausages, grinders, etc.).
My husband goes for black forest, cervelat with butter cheese and nothing else. I, on the other hand, am a huge fan of the under-appreciated mortadella with provolone, tomato, a little mayo and mustard on a crusty roll.
Stupid question.
jamon iberico, hands down.
You eat less meat and fat, 'cuz it's got so much more flavor
@liverwurstontoast -- mmmmmm, mortadella!
Mortadella, absolutely!!!!!!!! The best cold cut EVER.
My husband made it once and it was fantastic, but way too labor-intensive.
My favorite sandwich has my homemade olive oil bread, pesto sauce, and lots of thin slices of mortadella.
OMG I am drooling now............
Salami salami salami. Preferably dry-cured and really spicy.
Some really good sandwiches from the deli at home:
Smoked Turkey, Bacon, Cheddar Cheese, Honey Mustard, Lettuce, & Tomato.
Hummus, Swiss, Sprouts, Cucumber, & Tomato.
Turkey is my lunch meat staple, Roast beef is when I'm feeling splurgy and usually comes with horseradish cheddar cheese.
Newest kick I'm on:
Corned beef and thinly sliced red onion, romaine, paper thin slices of swiss with honey mustard and a dab of mayonnaise on a whole wheat wrap. Roll and get ready for heaven.
Mmmm. So many delicious options! Anyone remember that Fred Penner "Sandwiches" song?
My favorites:
-cold leftover meatloaf
-bologna/mortadella on buttered toast with lettuce and dijon
-ham and provolone with banana peppers
-roast beef, TONS of s&p, little mayo
Good crusty bread please for all of these with the exception of the bologna sandy-for whatever reason, plain ole white bread makes that just perfect.
Tofurkey, smoked. Lots of veganaise, romaine, dijon, tomato and sprouts. Delish.
