As much as I hate to admit it, I've still never been able to jump aboard the baked or roasted kale bandwagon. Kale is OK, but it has never been one of my particular cravings — that is, until this kale and pear smoothie recipe came into my world. It's delicious, it's beautiful, it's bright friggin' green!
Now, when we have the honor of mentioning Joy The Baker there's usually baking involved. Possibly a meat of some sort, but at least butter — there's always butter. But this time around, things are a little lighter and we wanted to make sure you knew about her Kale, Pear and Spinach Smoothie.
There's a banana added in for extra nutrients and to thicken things up a bit, but the real star of the show is the greens. There are two full cups of greens in this mixture and while it looks like it, it sure doesn't taste like it! When greens are added to smoothies they mainly supply vitamins and minerals and leave their earthy footprint at the door.
Although this recipe is without question vegetarian, many vegans will shy away from the honey. We suggest agave, or alternative sugar substitutes — or possibly even picking up fruit that's a little more ripe to sweeten things up!
Make sure you take a few seconds and hop over to Joy The Baker, because trust us when we say, you have to make this!

Haha, as soon as I read "it's bright friggin' green!", I knew it was Sarah writing this.
It looks really good, but strangely enough, the pear is turning me off. I could certainly try replacing it with other fruits though.
I just made a green smoothie last week based on a recipe from Whole Living... it had kale, a granny smith apple, parsley & banana. Not too bad! My concoction is featured over here: http://community.wholeliving.com/profiles/blogs/green-smoothie-the-verdict. I think I'd prefer spinach to kale in the next one, but I was pleasantly surprised.
I just made a smoothie this morning, and it was DELICIOUS: Orange juice, frozen strawberries, frozen raspberried, half an avocado, and a handful of spinach.
That recipe sounds like it doesn't need any sweetner, honey or otherwise, especially if you use really ripe bananas. My favorite smoothie uses frozen ripe bananas, tahini, spinach and water or almond milk.
Love green smoothies. Much cheaper versions of "Naked" juice really. You can also use this same philosophy of thought to create savory green "smoothies" - chickpeas and kale pureed together to create an awesomely basic creamy soup that can be as vegan (or carnivorous!) as you like.

I make a green smoothie every morning. Half a frozen banana, frozen blueberries, two cups of spinach, a tb or so of ground flaxseed, and almond milk. Delicious!
This looks delicious! I just discovered a new one with spinach, pear, apple, ginger, lemon and cilantro... try it out.
