Last May the Prince of Wales gave the keynote speech at the Future of Food conference on the Georgetown University campus. Many prominent food activists and environmentalists— Laurie David, Eric Schlosser, Marian Nestle—heard the speech...
...and believed it needed to be accessible to a larger audience. Now Rodale Books and GRACE Communications Foundation, with the help of Laurie David, have produced a printed publication of the speech, available with a new foreword by Wendell Berry and an afterword by Will Allen and Eric Schlosser. More about the book/speech:
Although the Prince seemed an unlikely messenger, he drew upon his nearly 30 years of organic farming experience and sustainable food advocacy, artfully revealing the true costs of industrial agriculture -- from soil degradation to water contamination -- while raising hope for a future that is more ecologically viable.

While it may surprise many his true contribution is organic farming - his estate is a self-contained marvel - growing food for the property and the garden tour teas and for local donation, with restored areas for wildlife, fully-contained on-site waste management, composting of course. I went on a tour as part of a group (it's open for roughly 6 months each year on weekdays) and it was one of the most impressive efforts I've seen. The property, in 30 years, has become completely organic - and - retains so much of the classic beauty that garden lovers admire in English gardens. Certainly something to aspire to whether you're a pauper or a prince.
Sorry, couldn't resist!
I admire this man greatly because of his organic farming. It wasn't easy for him for many years because of his countrymen's attitude toward it, but he persevered, much to his credit.
Agreed, HRH has made a great contribution to his country and the heath of our planet.
Kudos to Prince Charles for taking a strong stand! Also, if I could nitpick for a moment, it's Marion Nestlé, not Marian.
