Not in Season: Watermelon

Do you ever just get a mad craving for something not in season? For some reason we've been seeing watermelon everywhere, and that sweet, drippy juiciness sounds like the best thing imaginable right now. Witness, for instance, this Watermelon, Feta, Red Onion, and Mint salad from Pete Carpenter. (We've featured his lovely food photography before - see Prosciutto, Arugula, and Mozzarella Panini on No-Knead Olive Bread.)

Are you craving anything particularly summer-like right now? Does the new sunshine make you madly hungry for a bursting ripe tomato, or new corn, or autumn apples? More on our watermelon fixation below...

In addition to Pete's vibrant salad, we'd also like to try this Watermelon with Fennel Salt at Epicurious. What an interesting combination of flavors!

And while watermelon does not intuitively mesh with dairy, we have an utter devotion to this Watermelon Sundae - watermelon served with homemade ricotta ice cream, a little rough and gritty on the tongue, with chocolate curls showered over top. Delicious!

We'll wait patiently for late summer and the real watermelons of the season to come. Part of the deliciousness is the anticipation, and picking out an anemic watermelon at the grocery store right now would be wrong on many levels. Ripe, red, Ohio watermelons - they're just around the corner.

What are your out-of-season cravings?
