Yesterday Cambria and I spent a day in Chicago at the International Home + Housewares Show, the massive annual trade show where new products for the kitchen and home are introduced. There's always a dizzying array of stuff on display, much of it not worth mentioning, but we spotted a few gems we thought worth telling you about.
And we're starting with everyone's favorite little tidbit: the new KitchenAid mixer colors for 2013! Vibrant green, bubblegum pink, and read on to see a photo of the Watermelon...
The Canopy Green color is a vibrant emerald, similar to Pantone's "color of the year" (a green we saw frequently at the show this year).
The pink is a frothy bubblegum pink, one that's already being sold at Target under the color name "Flamingo." They called it "Cranberry" at the show, a name I find a bit confusing (I think of cranberry as a deeper red...?).
The final new color was Watermelon, seen above. It's a very pretty, fresh coral that also feels just a tiny bit retro. It stood out to me in the sea of colors, even before I knew it was a new one.
Our favorite, though, was the Emerald, which did look so cheery and bright.
Are you in the market for a stand mixer? Do any of these colors appeal to you? Stay tuned for more from Housewares — especially when it comes to mixers! KitchenAid is super popular, but they're about to get some competition from unexpected directions!

Bacsac Bacsquare 04...

Pretty! My white one was a gift, so I can't complain, but I do love all those colors!
I can't ever see myself getting much use out of one of those, but damn they are pretty. If I had room and money to spare I would have one just cuz... in Orange :)
Tangerine, not orange!
I bought a cobalt blue one for my best friend years ago (he likes baking cookies, and that's one of his favorite colors), and when he and I started dating and moved in together, it became ours. If I needed another one (because these things don't die - my mom's is around 30 years old), I'd get a wasabi green one to match the color I want to paint the kitchen.
I have my grandmother's kitchen aid in white, but if I ever do need another one the watermelon color is lovely.
beautiful colors!
Are these new ones as good as the old ones? Are they still made in the USA? Readers, what you say?
I love the matte grey in the front row.
I own a cobalt, which would be more accurately described as "cobalt dusted with flour, sugar, crumbs, etc" It never looks completely clean.
If I was to replace it, I would get white. Learned my lesson.
I love all the fun colors! Seeing them all on display in a rainbow makes me drool.
My husband (before we were even married) got me a pistachio green one for Christmas and I still love it. His co-worker had told him he was making a mistake getting me a kitchen appliance for Christmas, but he knew he was doing the right thing.
I have a jadeite colored one that has been discontinued for 14 years or so. It's the color that Martha Stewart's kitchen used to be back in the LIVING days. Love it, and it looks so great against the charcoal walls in my kitchen.
Absolutely not. I went through 3 mixers in 3 years. The transmissions are junk. If buying a mixer, see about finding an old one, from when Hobart was manufacturing them. I made my dad promise that I get his old almond-colored one from the 80s when he dies.
What about the recent 7 Qt (6.9l) lift-bowl mixer, was that one presented? If yes, did you notice in which colors? I would like to buy one, but am awaiting new (hopefully warm neutral) colors.
You have to be sure they have metal gear boxes. On the KitchenAid website they have addressed the issues they were having with the plastic gear boxes that they had switched to. I have a six quart model with a metal gear box and love it. No issues. I called KitchenAid with my concerns prior to purchasing it and they were very helpful and were aware of the problems that people were having with their products. The rep I got on the phone told me where to purchase one with metal gear boxes. I believe the plastic ones they were trying to switch to could not withstand the heat that the motor produced and the engines were overheating. I think they are still made in Greenville, OH.
Has anyone ever tried painting their white mixer? Or adorning it with decals?
I abuse mine so much that I knew I had to go for a "professional" model - they all have metal gears. The Artisan and whatnot still use plastic gears even though they have fixed the motor issue. If you want to keep it forever, splurge on a pro model. The downside is the lack of color range in the pro series. I went with a satin-finish silver model, but I wish I had gotten white just so I could paint it more easily.
Costco carries one at a much lower price than anyone else ($259 after rebate).
I've had a white one that I had gotten as a gift many years ago. Even though my white one looks kind of plain, it goes with practically every color I've painted my kitchens over the years.
I love the emerald green and the turquoise! I already have the pewter professional and I just love it! I would love to be like the pioneer woman and use a different color everytime I need to use the kitchenaid mixer! It has so many different uses, meatloaf, pasta, breads, muffins cookies, cakes, mashed potatoes yummmmmmmm!
The one in the top picture is called emerald? It looks more like a kelly green to me, a la Mad Men mod or retro. It's lovely!
I love that green! Alas, I bought a cobalt blue mixer about 10 years ago, and decided that would be the color I would go with for all my small appliances, so of course it was discontinued! I did find a refurbished food processor in cobalt, and some utensils on ebay, but capitulated on the stick blender and went with empire red.
