If you're looking for a clever yet easy-to-understand Italian cooking app, we think we've found it. Sara Jenkins' New Italian Pantry is built around the idea that once you have 16 basic Italian ingredients in your pantry, you can create almost any meal with whatever other ingredients you have on hand. Picked up some gorgeous greens at the market? Have a little pork you'd like to use up? Just plug in what you have, and the app will show you what you can do with it. Watch the video below to really be impressed:
The app is unusual because it organizes recipes based on the ingredients you have (as opposed to cookbooks which organize recipes based on categories, and then tell you what to buy). We love how Sara (owner of NYC's renowned Porsena and Porchetta and author of Olives and Oranges: Recipes and Flavor Secrets from Italy, Spain, Cyprus, and Beyond) explains spontaneous cooking, too. Everyone wants to do it, but you're often unsure how to start! As she says in the video,
People come to me and they say that they want to be the kind of spontaneous chef that Italians are. They want to go to the market and be inspired. I find that if you follow the Italian ideal where you have a well-stocked pantry with a group of core ingredients, [that] gives you the flexibility to go to the market and respond to what is freshest and most delightful and appealing.
The app is available now for $3.99 on iTunes. Stocking stuffer, anyone?
