Five days 'till Christmas - what's on the last minute list for newspaper food sections? No more gift guides, surely... In Boston they're talking cookies. There's a basic cookie mix, a fun cookie contest between some long-time friends, and an office cookie exchange at Knoll furniture company headquarters. In Missouri the Kansas City Star fills up the corners with easy fudge recipes, an eggnog and cranberry trifle, overnight omelet casserole, and a traditional Swedish tea ring. In Washington the Seattle Post-Intelligencer has a great primer on sparkling wines, some fresh recipes that take advantage of citrus oils, and recipes for layered casseroles that redeem holiday leftovers. The Dallas Morning News gives Texas bakers some more accessible holiday projects to do with kids, like these cake placecard holders. They also offer a do-ahead Christmas morning brunch and some tips on avoiding holiday weight gain. How thoughtful.
