For my wife's 30th birthday bash we wanted to do an unconventional themed party —something fun, eclectic, yet personal. Her love of books and food is what inspired our Wordy Thirty dinner party. Read on for details on this novel-themed party about food, drink, and great conversation.
As with all successful dinner parties it starts with the menu. We wanted everything served that night to have a connection to a famous narrative, so we pooled together ideas, using memories from our childhood to recent reads, to come up with a good mix of savory and sweet for our menu. The project also gave us an opportunity to create some fun and interesting items that we previously could only imagine tasting, like Turkish Delights from The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe.
The decor also needed to tie things together. We picked up a large hardcover book from a thrift store that was loaded with weathered pages. We ripped out the pages individually (my wife may have shed a tear) and used them to create several decorative elements - a "Happy Birthday" marquee, a sash of book "leaves," paper flowers, and more. Favorite books from our bookshelf also served as risers for serving platters and trays. We then took out some of our favorite word games such as Scrabble and Boggle, and scattered letters across the table spread. Finally, menu cards of each item were printed — with a picture of the book or author that inspired the fare along with a quote or description.
Everything came together beautifully, tasted great, and made for a fun whimsical night with friends that we won't forget. Recipes from the food that made this party a success are listed below.
- Pizza Napoletana (Eat, Pray, Love)
- Fried Green Tomatoes (Fried Green Tomatoes)
- French Bread (Les Miserables)
- Turkish Delights (The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe)
- Marmalade Sandwiches (Paddington Bear)
- "Eat Me" Cakes (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland)
- Plum Cake (Through the Looking Glass)
- Mint Julep (William Faulkner)
- Papa Doble (Earnest Hemingway)
- The Vesper (Casino Royale)

Bacsac Bacsquare 04...

I think I could have a whole The Belly of Paris themed party. Complete with a big bucket of butter. Is that wrong?
This is such a delightful idea! Love it.
What a splendid party! This is such a genius idea. Happy Birthday to your wife.
What fun!
I am very impressed with how authentic your Turkish Delight came out! I have visited Turkey a couple of times and this is EXACTLY how those amazing little gems of heavenly sweet confection look when purchased at local sweet shops. Well done!
Would be a perfect idea for my book club luncheon! Thanks for the ideas...
Ohh how lovely! I've always wanted to hold a literary-themed party. Even a Mad Hatter's tea party. I'm so stealing these ideas for my next birthday! Especially since I will be turning 42, which also has literary undertones. ;)
Pork barbeque from Gone with the Wind? Or chocolate pie from The Help?
This is such a great idea.
This is wonderful! How unique and interesting! Job well done!
I love when Walter Cunningham pours maple syrup all over his lunch at the Finch house (To Kill a Mockingbird)! Hey, that just reminded me of Buddy in the movie, Elf!
Oh, this is so fun. It is always such a treat, and so appetizing, to read the descriptions of food and meals in books. I love the idea of planning a whole party around the most delicious and delectable passages. Lovely, well done!
My brother once had a Lemony Snicket party- complete with heart shaped balloons, pasta puttanesca, and aqua martinis (water and an olive in a fancy glass). Book parties are always the best.
Such a great idea! I'd definitely incorporate something from "The Great Gatsby" ..actually, I could easily have an entire party around it!
Very cool, what a nice way to reuse a raggedy book. Ditto what LionessG said about the Turkish delights--though I've never been to Turkey--they look absolutely lovely and everything festive and fun.
Such a lovely idea!! Not quite as literary, but I would have thrown in a few bits of deep fried chicken or donuts for Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum. (Currently rereading them, and trying to do a detox at the same time was a stupid idea)
Charlie and the chocolate factory!
I'd have to go with the madeleines from Proust.
Theme party, cool!
@badwolf I totally want to have a Lemony Snicket party!
@AdelineA Oh my, bad idea! I love those books but she eats such horrible things!
I'd love to have a Mossflower themed party. Brian Jaques has always had such delectable descriptions of food in his stories.
"Pork barbeque from Gone with the Wind? Or chocolate pie from The Help?"
Er... the chocolate pie from 'The Help' would decidedly NOT be a good thing to serve at a dinner party!
Awesome!!!! :) I might have to do this for my 30th!
This is brilliant and so well put together! I love that you had foods from different books! I would love to do something like this and include a recipe or two from Like Water for Chocolate.
