Type of space:
Tell us about your outdoor project and how you enjoy it:
We decided to rent our current space after falling in love with the spacious back porch and large (albeit overgrown) backyard. We moved in the spring and set out some containers with tomatoes and herbs, which flourished. This year, we have transformed an unruly yard into a healthy and spacious garden. We planted the necessities for spring, summer and fall cooking — herbs, salad greens, plenty of tomatoes for canning, berries for freezer jam, peppers and cukes for pickling and squash and pumpkins! We look forward to our bounty as well as sharing with friends and neighbors.
How did you create it?
We planned ahead and carved out some large garden beds which we topped with clean soil and some organic fertilizer last fall. After the spring thaw, we turned over the soil and added a layer of compost and another layer of clean garden soil. Since we started most of our plants from seed over the winter, we transplanted after the last frost and added in a few additional plants which we purchased from a local nursery.
