This week on The Kitchn, a few of us have opted to chat about our favorite weeknight treat. This post took me a while to consider: M & M's? A few bites of ice cream? A chocolate chip cookie with tea? No, there is something a little bit better, something I always keep around the house and indulge in often.Dark chocolate homemade nutella is my favorite weeknight sweet. On toast, you may ask? No, I actually will often just have a generous spoonful at night with some decaf coffee or black tea if I'm up late writing or doing projects around the house. I just can't imagine anything better than a rich, nutty, smooth chocolate spread that's only slightly sweet and just a little bit salty. It calls to me from about 4 p.m. onward, but I try not to listen until evening strikes.
I started buying the brand-nameNutella for years and then realized how easy it was to avoid the hydrogenated oils that it contains by making your own. Now I make a big jar and put in the refrigerator and my boyfriend and I have little bits throughout the week.
In addition to being a legitimate treat, I actually find it rather energizing largely because of the protein. I use dark chocolate and try to use as little sugar as I can get away with, and my guilt-factor remains pretty low with this sweet treat.
