When I pared down my kitchen tools last year, the Breville Smart Oven was among those that stayed firmly in place. It's a counter hog, no doubt about it, but I use this appliance nearly every day.
So much more than a toaster oven, the Smart Oven is the appliance I use most for baking, roasting, broiling, reheating (I don't own a microwave), and, yes, making toast. If I need to make a big batch of cookies or multiple pans of roasted vegetables, I'll use my full-size oven, but this countertop oven works for just about everything else. I even bake cakes, pies, and bread in it.
In addition to overall energy efficiency, one of my favorite features of the Smart Oven is that it preheats super fast. This is especially convenient when I need to quickly toast nuts or defrost something. It also has a convection setting, which can shorten cooking times. Plus, using the Smart Oven doesn't heat up the whole kitchen, which is nice when one lives in a warm locale like Southern California (or for summer cooking in general).
Finally, because I cook from a lot of British recipes, I love the fact that this has Celsius in addition to Fahrenheit settings. No need for conversion charts!
Do I wish I had the extra counter space that this oven occupies? Yes – but for me, the trade-off is worth it.

Agree 1000%. I abhor counter clutter, but can't live without my multi-function toaster oven. Use it every day and can't imagine life w/o it for the same reasons you mentioned!
I mocked my parents for having this thing, until I used it. It's super fast and perfect for small things yet you can bake a whole chicken in it.
Yes, yes, yes. I love our Breville! It is better than my last 2 fairly expensive toaster ovens because it holds a 13 x 9 pan and heats accurately, and we can't live without it. We have a small kitchen, but I'd get rid of our microwave first. Perfect toast, pies, cakes, etc., I even made a chiffon cake in it that came out perfectly! I cook for 2, and this oven is great - we use it every day .
totally love it. my oven is such a pain to heat to the right temperature, and this little guy is a huge time saver.
I'd love one of these (eyed it adoringly during Christmas) but I just don't have the counter space. I can see how useful it would be, particularly for small families. I didn't think of toasting nuts...great idea.
I agree! The Smart Oven (specifically, not just ANY toaster oven) is one of my favorite tools in the kitchen. It's worth every penny.
For those of you complaining about space, you just need to prioritize. I lived in a 2bd apartment for five years and I found space for this. Also, they make two other models that are smaller and cheaper that perform jusdt as well.
I definitely agree. I got one for Christmas last year and I love it! I use it all the time. Being a single gal who loves to cook, it has been wonderful for cooking smaller servings. In fact, I rarely even turn my full size oven on anymore unless I'm making a big batch of something. And this one is just so...pretty for lack of a better word. It looks great on my countertop. I would definitely give up something else before this appliance.
Even though we could have fixed our broken toaster over for $1.90, we went ahead and got this one! We have major toaster love! Even my husband cooks more because it's so much easier with the Breville Smart Oven.
I would love to have this too but it does not currently retail in Singapore :(!
Yes yes yes!
If our awesome quartz element toaster oven ever kicks the bukket, we are getting one of these.
We also don't have a microwave, and I use it for everything in tiny batches, when I don't feel like heating up the whole oven.
I have plenty of counter space.....and a toaster oven that I almost NEVER use. I think I'll pass on a $250 toaster oven, TYVM.
I'm with you; my Breville is worth every inch of counter space that it hogs, even in a fairly small kitchen. It is much more practical to fire this baby up than it does to use my regular oven. It doesn't heat up my whole apartment the way the large oven does, a huge benefit over hot TX summers. Plus, you can set you dinner plates on top of it to warm them as your dinner cooks. Everything I've cooked in my Breville comes out perfectly. Worth every penny!
I have almost no counter space and my kitchen is super tiny (2 cupboards above counter level and a 20" stove). I use my smart oven almost exclusively and have no microwave.
Mine is a simpler version, but is also a Breville and I love it. I'm single, living in a small 2 bedroomer and am more than happy to sacrifice the necessary counter space. I gave up my microwave when I didn't use it for a year but use the toaster oven nearly every day (in fact I'm cooking a piece of salmon in it as I write this). My oven is only used when cooking for guests - the rest of the time it acts as storage for my large wok and oven pan.
My birthday is next month.......I think I might ask for this!
I would love to replace my microwave and my toaster oven with one appliance, however, I often make a big pot of soup and then we like to eat it for a few days, reheating it in the microwave. If you don't have a microwave, how do you heat up liquid foods?
I bought mine in Bed Bath and Beyond with the 20% coupon.
Love it!
I got the smaller version of this oven for Christmas after seeing previous posts about it here, and I love it so far! I've been happy with the size of the small version, since it is just me and my boyfriend, and we tend to cook things like chicken breasts instead of a whole chicken.
I adore mine too. It makes perfect macarons! And roast chicken with excellent crispy skin.
I have another convection toaster oven (can't remember the brand).
We bought it for a couple of reasons, mostly enegy efficiency, but we bought it in the middle of the summer to try and keep our kitchen a bit cooler while cooking. We now only turn our giant oven on perhaps once a week?... Probably less. The microwave isn't coming with us when we move at the end of the month :)
@SRLM,
Are you serious? Liquid food can be reheated on a stovetop or in the toaster oven. It takes a bit longer than the microwave, but not that much.
Wonderful work, i will prepare this for my daring sister party.
