I might have ditched my sweet tooth awhile back, but that doesn't stop me from being intrigued about things like homemade gummy bears and now gum drops. They'd be perfect for a work day snack or something pretty for a party. The best part? They're far easier to make than you'd ever imagine!
Over at Bakerella, there's been some colorful things happening. It never ceases to amaze me what a boc of gelatin, some sugar and a little water can create. This mixture was of course helped out by some food coloring and a flavorful extract or two. The end result? It's a rainbow-tastic tray of colors!
Although we doubt we'll be making our own gum drops every time we have the hankering, this goes to show how easy the process is if you did. It's a fun way to make a pretty presentation for a bridal or baby shower, even just a birthday party when store bought just won't do.

Dangit...the 2nd degree burn on my thumb from my last candy-making attempt (I'm way too uncoordinated for molten sugar) isn't fully healed yet, and now you've got me thinking of doing it again...these are so cute!
boc =box?
I'd be interested to see if you could replicate the molds the pros use at home with a tray and some corn starch! I may have to try this around Halloween!
I would be really into this...if gelatin weren't absolutely revolting.
So I thought this was so cute that I immediately gave it a try. The gumblobs (not drops yet until I cut it) are in the refrigerator right now. It was really easy except that it's so boring sitting there stirring a pot constantly for 25 minutes. I haven't done candy much in my life but the few times I have taught me that when they tell you to stir constantly, you do NOT stop stirring.
Also, take it seriously when it says a large pot. I used the pot I usually use when I make candy, but idk if it was the gelatin or what, but this stuff foamed and bubbled over in a bad way. I quickly transferred it to a larger pot and kept going, but the mess that I am going to have to clean up once my stove cools down enough to touch is a nightmare. Next time, bigger pot.
Amazing! I wonder if something similar could be achieved using agar agar instead of gelatin. I screwed up a batch of vegan lemon bars once when I used powdered agar instead of flaked without realizing that they are not equivalent, and the consistency was very gum-drop like.
I tried these last Xmas for gifts. Absolute Fail. They never set up.
