There are a lot of strange food-eating competitions out there, but I never saw this one coming. At this year's Taste of Buffalo event, there will be the first-ever kale-eating competition, or, as it's being called, the "Kale Cup." Participants will have eight minutes to consume as much kale as possible. The grand-prize winner will take home a cool $2000.

Just imagine all of that roughage.

The Taste of Buffalo includes a lot of the things you'd expect to see at a food festival: There are Oreo shakes, buffalo mac and cheese, and something called the "Cheesus." There was, however, a concerted effort to include a lot of lighter and healthier options at the festival this year. In fact, every booth is required to have at least one healthier item. To push this agenda, the Kale Cup was born.

The Major League of Competitive Eating comments on the choice for a new kind of competition:

Let it not be said that Major League Eating has shirked its responsibilities when it comes to highlighting the wonders of the vegetable kingdom. For the first time in human history, the world's greatest eaters will test themselves against the almighty kale — the leafy green vegetable that has captured the hearts and minds of both the culinary set and those for whom their body is a temple.

According to Eater, you'd need to eat nine cups of kale to get the same caloric intake as one hot dog. While according to this stat kale is definitely considered a "healthier" alternative to hot dogs, I can't imagine that eating a ton of kale will feel any better going down — especially if it's meant to be eaten raw.
