If we ever wanted to convince someone of the importance of breakfast, we wouldn't enlist the help of mothers, doctors, or even chefs. No, we'd simply introduce them to the photography of Jennifer Rakowski, whose daily documentation of her morning meals is quietly stunning and inspirational. We have admired Jen's photos for some time, and when we heard that she had published a book, we asked to share some of her work on The Kitchn. She also gave us a glimpse into her small Philadelphia kitchen…
TOP AND MIDDLE ROWS
• 1-10 The breakfasts – We initially planned to share just five images from Jen's Flickr stream, but it was so difficult to narrow them down that we decided to give you ten. Jen's photographs show us how simple yet creative and special the first meal of the day can be. We love how she captures not only the foods she eats (and her great dishware collection!), but also the changing seasons, the morning light, and the sense of ritual. She inspires us to take a breath, cook something nutritious, indulge in a treat, and savor the moment.
• 11-14 The kitchen – Jen admits she and her boyfriend Zach don't love their rental kitchen; it's no more than 50 square feet with very little counter space and a tiny oven and refrigerator. In spite of these obstacles, we think their kitchen looks warm and homey with yellow cabinets, well-organized tools, and lovely details like vintage pitchers and a bright red tea kettle.
• 15 The book – Check out Breakfast, Jen's new book of photographs, texts, and recipes.
