"Whether you’re poolside, beachside, at a park or in a backyard, the Memorial Weekend barbecue is the first celebratory outdoor event of the season.

While planning your menu, think about creating a playlist specifically tailored for your beginning-of-summer get-together. The music you choose helps set the tone. Unapologetic fun should be the order of the day; so try to keep it as upbeat, bright and breezy as the weather. This isn’t the time to play sleepy James Blunt ballads, crunchy Rammstein headbangers, or anything too musically challenging. Tempo, melody, and a fun hook with a rump-shaking beat go a long way."

Summer Samba

A mix of Bossa Nova, Ragga, lounge-pop, contemporary Latin music and jangly guitar-based New Wave. This playlist is book-ended by 2 versions of the Latin-inflected R&B song “Another Star”: the first is Portuguese version “Outro Lugar” by Brazilian disco diva Salome de Bahia; and the second is Steve Wonder’s original. Other tracks of note: the Bossa-Nova-tinged “The Garden” by turntablist Cut Chemist (best known as a member of the L.A. hip-hop crew Jurassic 5 and Latin-funk band Ozomatli); and the earnestly-sung (and fabulously-harmonized) lounge-tastic cover of Seals & Crofts’ “Summer Breeze” by Ray Coniff & The Singers. Marinate your tri-tip to this mix, and serve up some Capirinhas (or Mojitos, Margaritas, Micheladas or Palomas).
