Emma is the backbone of a very strong team, here at The Kitchn. Her culinary training, attention to detail, and warm writing style have been a core part of the site for nearly three years. What would we do without her?! Emma brings everything from basic cooking tips, to ingredient guides, to baking tutorials and beer reviews. She lives in an old converted brewery in Columbus, Ohio, where she cooks up delicious things and brews beer too! Read on for Emma's favorite kitchen tool, secret indulgence, and favorite quote on food and cooking.
A FEW QUESTIONS FOR EMMA
- What’s your favorite kitchen tool?
My Dutch oven. I use mine for almost everything: stir fries, soups, bread, braises, everything. It hardly ever makes it back into the cupboard after washing. Using it occasionally feels like wrestling with an awkward baby dinosaur, but lifting off the top and breathing in the aromas of whatever has been cooking never fails to make me smile. - What’s your secret indulgence in the kitchen?
Toast. Made with homemade bread, toasted just until golden on the edges, slathered with butter, and sprinkled with sea salt. If it were possible to live on toast alone, I would. - What’s your favorite quote on food, cooking, or eating?
"When you acknowledge, as you must, that there is no such thing as perfect food, only the idea of it, then the real purpose of striving toward perfection becomes clear: to make people happy. That's what cooking is all about." - Thomas Keller

Emma..I must say that first of all I always love your posts. They're always an enjoyment. It's nice to see someone from my hometown on the kitchn that's a contributor and a great one at that! Keep up the good work!!
Emma... I just formed a loaf of bread exactly as you showed it in your video on no-knead bread... Just like I do about once a week ever since that video was posted. Thanks.
I have been wondering if you were the same Emma Christensen who was such a pleasure to work with years ago...so excited to find out it is. Love your posts! -Berkley (formerly of PCP)
Can we have a recipe for that yummy looking thin crust pizza?
Never mind! Just saw the link... oops!
That pizza looked so good I made it for lunch. My two teenagers (home from school on break) thank you VERY much.

Umm... am I the only one who wants a HOUSE TOUR!?!?!? Emma - I'd LOVE to see your converted brewery of a house!! It sounds amazing!
Me too!!! Your posts are my favorites :-D
And to find out that you're "just around the corner"! We're in Gahanna!
Aw, thanks for the warm notes, everyone! You're all so sweet. If I ever manage to get all of the apartment clean at one time, a house tour will be in order. ;-)
Berkley - Yes, I'm the same Emma that worked at PCP! Ah, memories...
Yay, Emma! You're so inspiring to me, both as a cook and as a writer. I look forward to much more inspiration in 2011!
Portland misses you!
Andy
OMG, I LOVE this feature. The writers on theKitchn are the best on the site IMHO, and I find their profiles more interesting than reading about celebrity chefs.
I can't wait to try your pizza recipe, Emma!
