Q: Given the latest news on the benefits on the Mediterranean diet, I'm looking for a cookbook with both healthful yet elevated Mediterranean recipes. Most of the book titles I could find on Amazon end with "for dummies," but I am definitely looking for something with more interesting, complex recipes.
Could you recommend a great Mediterranean cookbook for an experienced home cook?

Anything by Claudia Roden.
Try my Mother-in-laws cookbook. It's been going for 17 years now selling to local Mediterranean stores in London. It has grown in popularity that we have created a new batch of books to be sold on the Internet for more to enjoy
Check it out..... I enjoy the recipes on most weekends...

jerusalem. vefa's kitchen.
Anything by Paula Wolfert
Thanks for that suggestion! I just bought it.
How to Roast a Lamb by Michael Psilakis
"Vefa's Kitchen" by Vefa Alexiadou
"1080 Recipes" by Simone Ortega, Ines Ortega, Javier Mariscal
"Mediterranean Clay Pot Cooking: Traditional and Modern Recipes to Savor and Share"
by Paula Wolfert
I have "How to Roast a Lamb" and it's a good book... also "Greek Cookery: From the Hellenic Heart" George Calombaris (this one was riginally published in Australia so don't let the metric measurements bother you, it's easy to convert)
Vefa's Kitchen.
Any of Ottolenghi's cookbooks!

I second "Jerusalem" by Ottolenghi... everything is delicious and healthful
Love this question and really love reading through all the suggestions. My husband said the Mediterranean way of eating actually sounds really enjoyable to him. My only problem is the chickpea. Call me crazy, but I've never liked chickpeas. I love all other legumes though, anyone have thoughts on subbing another bean for chickpeas?
this cookbook from a gorgeous vegetarian italian hotel in umbria is phenomenal: http://www.amazon.com/Vegeterranean-Vegetarian-Malu-Simoes-Cunha/dp/1608870790
KT, I am not a chickpea fan either. I just use cannellini beans and they work fine. I even make a white bean version of hummus that I like much better than the standard stuff.
Lebanese Cookbook looks great- though Lebanese food slightly different than the Spanish Mediterranean diet they tested, still good!
Use Fava beans instead of chickpeas. Many Levantine countries use more Fava than chickpeas to make their Falafel, I bet it'd be good with hummus or other chickpea recipes
Mediterranean Harvest by Martha Rose Shulman. I bought this book and was halfway through browsing it before I realized it was vegetarian. It's amazing, covers everything from breads, appetizers to traditional desserts, and many of the recipes could easily be adapted to contain meat if thats your thing.
How to Roast a Lamb by Michael Psilakis is a great Greek cookbook. A little involved, but the recipes are amazing.
I don't have experience with them, but I'd wager any of the Chez Panisse books will have great California/French/Mediterranean style recipes for an advanced cook.
Or any California style cuisine books, since it's very similar in style to the Mediterranean.
Yes, Ottolenghi forever!
Definitely Jerusalm, by Yotam Ottolenghi-- http://amzn.to/157taPl
and I am kind of in love with the Persian cookbook Pomegranates and Roses: http://amzn.to/YLq5z3
I also love The Arab Table by May Bsisu: http://amzn.to/YCngBW
All of these books are really wonderful if you love cookbooks that have stories, cultural notes and the history of the food. I would read them even without recipes!
I found this one on the clearance rack at a book store and bought it on a whim. I actually really like it! It's called Essential Mediterranean Cookbook and walks you through common ingredients of the region and recipes from each country bordering the Mediterranean.

The Mediterranean Vegan by Donna Klein. I'm not vegan anymore, but I love this cookbook! It has excellent versions of traditional recipes from the Mediterranean region.

Martha Rose Shulman published an excellent Mediterranean cookbook called Mediterranean Harvest. Whole food, fresh, flavorful, easy recipes. This book is vegetarian, but you can always add meat if you need it. Also Williams-Sonoma puts out a great Mediterranean cookbook; Essentials of Mediterranean Cooking. I highly recommend both!
