- What makes your small kitchen so cool?
- We took a non-functioning kitchen and rebuilt it to maximize storage space and upgrade all the appliances.
- Describe a challenge you've overcome or a smart resource you've found for your kitchen.
- Storage is a real challenge in this condo because we have under 700 sq ft in the entire condo. We took over wasted space in the wall tucked back in corner, to create a pantry. Now, I can have the spice rack within arms reach while cooking at the stove. And all the shelves in the pantry are on roll-outs so everything is easy to reach. Without this pantry that whole corner would be wasted due to the angle of our back door.
- What's your favorite meal to cook here?
- I love making soups and BLT's for lunch and or dinner. My secret is making the bacon in the oven under the broiler and toasting hamburger buns for the bread. (Much softer on the roof of the mouth than regular toast!)

this kitchen is stunning - all of the little storage details are fantastic.
love this!
what are the appliance brands?
The half-fridge half-freezer is Liebherr, the dishwasher is Bosch and the range & hood are Bertazzoni.
I love the toe kick drawer! I saw something similar on an IKEA hack site and will definitely be doing it in my new kitchen.
I love the cabinet color - did you paint it yourself? I'm thinking about a green-gray like this, would love to know the color!
This is a beautiful kitchen. Love the wall colors and would love to know what they are. Thanks!
I freaking love those cabinet pulls! The cabinets themselves are gorgeous and obviously good quality. If you don't mind sharing who designed/produced the cabinets? The toe-kick drawer is genious.
This is beautifully designed and executed. I clicked on the second picture and literally gasped at all the cunning storage solutions. Brava, Maureen!
Okay that does it, I need to get a tall counter depth fridge.
Love this look. Love the colors and the open shelves above the sink. If I were going to redo my kitchen I would use this for inspiration.
The cabinet color is Benjamin Moore Sandy Hook Gray and the walls are Valspar Blindfold. The cabinets were made by JRC Builders Inc in Oakland CA. I designed the cabinets and they built, painted and installed them.
Fantastic job Maureen! I love how you still have space to actually prep and cook and your colors are divine. The stainless steel doesn't look so cold, it is more stoic. Lovely, lovely!!
This is the most beautiful small kitchen I have ever seen. It is distinguished by tasteful elegance and the retention of functionality. The right mix of warm and cool grey along with a delicate, muted blue makes one feel at ease and at home. The glass hardware and new appliances is a welcomed, measured morsel of modern design.
I love this kitchen so much that I can't even think of any other word than "amazing!!".
I love this kitchen. It's so functional for storage, has a nice amount of counter space for prep work, and has been planned for convenience of having the waste pullout and dishwasher exactly where it's needed, by the sink. The colors are very soothing. Although I know this has been set up for a photo shoot, the shelves are rather bare but lovely in the photo. If this were my kitchen, I know the shelves would be filled with jars of staples and appliances. This kitchen is my favorite so far.
I have actually seen Maureen's kitchen in person.
It lives up to all the comments already submitted here, and more!
I also watched as she prepared a wonderful soup, and witnessed the convenience
of the appliances, as well as the corner pantry with all her spices at hands reach.
I love the "hidden" features, ie. dishwasher; and the sliding drawers are unique!
Love it! Great cabinet colors, countertops, and storage. The rug also looks lovely in the kitchen. It really gives it a homey feel.
Are those countertops flush with the cabinets? Such a clean look.
Beautiful! It's modern and sleek, but warm. "A place for everything and everything in its place." I like the lighting, especially around the rooster. Great job!
It's wise that the flex hose reaches around the corner to douse major fires on the stovetop.
Looks great--makes me want to cook! Nice job Reen!
Maureen-- you really should invite your tennis friends over to see this in person! It looks fantastic, and I love how small it is! LA
This is my favorite kitchen so far, and the only one I've voted. Amazing job, Maureen!
Oh I am most impressed with the organization.
I absolutely love this kitchen. The colors, the design/organization. The details. Wow!
Maureen----Are you happy with your Liebherr? I would like to get a 24" for my renovation but have seen mixed reviews for all of the few stand alone options out there. Is yours a stand alone? It looks to me like it is but I haven't been able to find it on-line. I like the door style better than the one that has the large "Liebherr" embossed on the front. Thanks so much.
Well done. I want to cook in here.
Fantastic functional kitchen! The storage solutions are wonderful. I'll be looking up JRC Builders, for sure.
Yes I love my Liebherr fridge because they keep food fresher longer. I would recommend the model with the logo on the door because it has shelves on the inside of the door for condiments and milk etc... This model doesn't have th
Stunning! I love the look of this kitchen. Can you tell us more about the counters. I'm planning a reno soon and have been looking for something light and these are beautiful.
Love the toekick drawers!
The counters are Pacific Pearl Marble from IRG in Brisbane,CA. They came with a polished finish but my tile guy Tommy from Vienna Tile & Stone suggested that he hone them to remove any micro scratches and the result was fantastic.
amazing! very inspirational!!!
I love this and would love to see the rest f your home, especially the bathroom.
I am with everyone else, genus use of space and color. Great details, fixtures, rug.
Your kitchen just got my vote. Makes up for having to wash dishes in the bathroom sink during the renovation. Looks like it was worth the wait. Well done!
I am about to buy a Liebherr refrigerator. Have you been happy with it? Do you know the name or model number of this particular one? I l too like how it doesn't have the large logo on the front.
Liebherr refrigerators are fantastic. This is the second one we have purchased and they have out preformed any other brand we have had in keeping food fresher, longer. This model is the Bfi1061, it doesn't have the shelves inside the door for milk and condiments etc..., which is a bit of a pain. I have come up with cleaver ways around that, but for anyone else; I would recommend the model RB1410 which is roughly the same size but has the selves in the door. Good luck with yours and hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
Fantastic!
Gorgeous and well thought out kitchen.
Do you have any details on the kick plate / toe plate drawer?
I'm trying to get them in my new kitchen, however the legs on the cabinet are proving a pain (too close together).
How did you do yours, are they part of the kitchen, bought or built yourself?
@compact, these cabinets were custom built by JRC Builders Inc in Oakland CA. The toe kick drawers are basically boxes (with roll-out drawers mounted in them) that the cabinets sit on instead of legs. Professional pre-planning is essential here so the cabinets can be leveled to support both the counter top but also allow the drawers to roll out freely. I requested that the screws for the handles be counter-sunk in order to max out the internal storage in the drawer. Sounds minor but it can be the difference between the cookie-sheet fitting in the drawer and the drawer being useless. On the large one under the sink, the builder suggested just a bevel cut on the bottom edge of the front plate; so I can slide my fingers underneath and pull. A much cleaner look, since this kitchen is open to other rooms. Good luck with your new kitchen!
What a wonderful use of space. I adore your "little" fridge and dishwasher.
storage is love. the roll-outs are amazing. and i know this is just a minor detail, but i love that you extended the open shelving over the sink onto the side of the cabinets.
Excellent design -- smart, fun, and hyper-efficient. Way to go!
Wow...you've done such a beautiful job! I love everything about it...the design, color, appliances and creative use of space. (Definately not recognizable from it's previous state). Fabulous.
I enjoyed this kitchen overall, but it's the fact that you've opened up certain areas to show us how you really use those interiors! Great work.
So unique..there is no comparison!!
Wow. All the others look like Home Depot. Congratulations for keeping with the age of your apartment !!
where did you find the drawers and door racks in that last photo of your pantry? great job by the way! I'm super impressed with your storage and organization!
Great job! Of course it's just as I would have expected from you :)
I wanna ee the whole house! Love it.
Looks great Reen Very functional Great job :)
Outstanding!
@gail_forcewinds : Thank you so much. The pantry pullouts and spice rack for the door were provided by my Cabinet Builder. But if you are not in the SF area then look for such things online at The Hardware Hut or The Container Store.
What a lovely kitchen. I can't get enough photos of beautiful small kitchens. Few questions - do you have a microwave and if so, how have you cleverly concealed it? They are the toughest appliance to fit in a small kitchen.
Also - why would commenters leave nasty, cutting remarks about other kitchens on this post? It ruins the spirit of the website.
@CHEZPATRICE I can't find a Microwave that I like.
I know, I was so sorry to see that comment too because my other kitchen is from Home Depot and we just love it. In fact most, of the storage ideas I used in this kitchen design were first learn about from my experience working with Home Depot's Kitchen Designer.
The overwhelming positivity of the comments really blew me away and far outweigh the childish ones.
I love your kitchen! So beautiful! I was wondering what you used to design your kitchen? Any particular software? I'm going to be redoing my kitchen soon, and I'm using a contractor for installation and procuring my own cabinets. So I've been trying to come up with a design myself, which is a challenge without good software. I've tried the Lowes online designer and Ikea's without much luck.
Also, did you get quotes for cabinets through Home Depot or general contractor who uses the big names in cabinets? Or did you automatically go straight to a custom builder? I'm just curious about:price comparison. So far, I'm getting quotes in the $50-$70k range for my large kitchen, and my husband choked when he heard that. It's not happening at that price. :-) Thank you!
@brigittep72: Thank you for your nice comments. We love it too because it works so well for us. I used JRC cabinet builders located just outside of San Francisco for the drawings, field measurements and installation. They drew up the cabinets as I requested, even though they hadn't built some of the things I was asking for before this project. I started the design process on notebook paper and then I actually built a play kitchen out of cardboard boxes and tape! No kidding. What looks good on paper doesn't always work in real life. That cost sounds about right if that includes the appliances too. Hope that helps - Good luck!
Wow. What a kitchen. It's so efficient, and two people can work on different things without crowding one another.
