Thanks to Kitchn reader Loi for sharing her sweet kitchen facelift with us! It's always inspiring to see creative kitchen solutions from readers.
In Loi's case, her eclectic approach is both aesthetically-pleasing and functional. A long vintage credenza and free floating open shelves add personality while also providing storage and workspace. A black and grey cotton throw rug grounds the room, while a big mirror over the stove gives the illusion of space. The mostly neutral palette is broken by a few touches of red, which makes the whole room feel quite cheery!
Thanks, Loi!

Red-and-Pink-Stripe...

Very eclectic space, some interesting ideas. I would love to be able to utilize a piece of freestanding furniture in my kitchen. As it is now, it's completely built in, floor to ceiling, with builder grade cabinets and it's a bit much.
This kitchen has some good ideas. I like the storage solutions with the hanging cutting boards, and pot lid rack. I think all the different surfaces would be little much for my personality, but it's not my kitchen. I do like how things are repurposed. It's very practical, and I love the pops of red! Thanks for some good ideas.
Did she make the hanging shelf unit that is holding (what I think is) four large platters? That is awesome! What a fantastic idea.
Ubi, it looks like that shelf is made out of a pallet with some of the cross pieces cut out. Very cool.
Are there any "before" photos? I'm asking because the post title has the word "facelift" in it.
Anyway, this kitchen isvery lovely. It's got personality and is full of personal touches. It does look a little cluttered, but for some reason, it works. Must be because everything seems to have a home. The concept of having a mirror above the stove is interesting, although I'd get freaked out every time I see myself cooking! Not having any cabinets on the walls really pays off. You can have as many shelves and hanging rails, rods and hooks as you want! The credenza is just gorgeous! Lovely, lovely kitchen overall.
By the way, the rug is so intereseting! I read on your blog that you painted it, tell us more!
Yes, the shelf holding the white platters is indeed a pallet that I turned vertical and added some supports to, so that the plates would not fall through. I've added some "semi-before" shots to my blog post after reading these comments, see them here:

Thanks for the input ;)
Loving the good-size mirror over the range/oven. Yes, it "gives the illusion of space" but, more importantly, it's a great way for the cook to stay connected to what's going on in the kitchen. You can keep an eye on the kids/pets, continue conversations with guests, keep an eye on the traffic behind you when pulling out a hot dish, etc. Wish this was used more often - too many rangetops and sinks are set against the wall and treated as dead end space.
Not a fan of hanging utensils anywhere in a home or open storage. It looks like a cafeteria to me. But I do appreciate this undertaking.
I do think the bicyle wheels are a fun touch.
Love this kitchen. Great ideas...all the differing textures and patterns are pulled together very nicely:)
Hard to appreciate a before and after without a before.
I really adore this and I hope you enjoy your new space!
