I recently reviewed a store-bought sparkling herbal water, which I loved, but it also got me thinking: why not make herb-infused fizzy water at home?

If you have a SodaStream or other home carbonator, it's easy to make your own herbal soda water. Customize it with any herbs you like, and you have a simple, elegant, and sugar-free beverage for parties or everyday.

First, you need to infuse still water with herbs such as mint, lemongrass, lavender, lemon verbena, or whatever you like. You may need to play around, but a good place to start is to add about 2 tablespoons of fresh herbs (gently bruised or spanked) to 1 liter of still water. Refrigerate overnight, remove the herbs, and carbonate. For a pretty presentation, serve the sparkling water in a swing-top bottle with a sprig inside.

In general I caution putting anything other than water in the SodaStream, as I've had bad, dramatic experiences involving juices and strong teas (though it seems others have found a way). However, a light herb-infused water seems to work just fine.
