Trying to keep food and drinks chilled at a dinner party? Forget sloshy bowls of ice. This simple IKEA hack alternative is much better.
IKEA Hackers recently featured a neat hack from the Finnish blog Houses and Hopes, wherein a basic IKEA office staple like the SPONTAN is combined with a magnetic board and several ice packs to create a simple, easy cold serving station.
To make your own, place a towel on your counter and the frozen ice packs on top. Place your tray on top of that, making sure the ice packs are in the corners so they don't slide around. This will create a chilly surface for small finger foods until they can be devoured. When you're done, just dismantle and use your board elsewhere in the home!

This sounds like a great way to serve cold desserts or sushi. I'd also line the bottom with a towel to keep the whole thing from slipping and to catch condensation.
It's too bad the SPONTAN boards don't double as dry-erase boards. It would be genius to use them not only as a keep-cold tray, but write labels and cute presentation drawings on them as well. I'm sure there's a board somewhere out there that will do double duty.
