It's fairly common now to see magnetic knife strips in kitchens, but every time I do see them, I'm reminded once again how great they are: it's such a simple, affordable, and functional storage solution for knives, all without taking up precious counter or drawer space.
You also get the added bonus of a sculptural-type piece in your kitchen, especially when it's installed on a black background. Something about the jagged lines and varying heights all in a row... I don't know. It just works for me.
Do you have a magnetic knife strip in your kitchen? Do you love it?

Bacsac Bacsquare 04...

There's no free wall space in my kitchen. It's all cabinets and a window, and I wouldn't be comfortable putting them above the stove.
My solution instead is to use knife covers and storing them in my silverware drawer. The covers protect the edges, so I don't have to use a big bulky knife block.
I don't have a magnetic strip--I discovered that I can slip knives, blade down, into the tiny gap between my Ikea work table and my kitchen counter, which are exactly the same height. The handles rest above the counter where I can easily grab them, and the blades are below, safely out of reach. These are all great looking knife strips, though!
I'm really bad at installing things on walls, but I found that my magnetic knife strip sticks to my fridge really well so I just leave it there (on the side, not the door).
I installed under my cabinet. Works great!
I love having a magnetic knife strip and it sits between cabinet and counter. But I'm curious as to how people orient their knives. I'm right-handed and have mine set like the first pic.
I love mine so much! My knives are oriented like the first pic too, @even6!
If you're looking for a nice knife rack, my friend is a woodworker and makes beautiful custom ones (as well as other things). Hope this kind of post is allowed - check him out!

I installed mine vertically and love it!
I just bought one of these and have been meaning to put it up - just trying to figure out the perfect spot before drilling! An added benefit of these is that they are way more hygienic than knife block!
I have a tiny kitchen and we installed one on a wall beneath our cabinet. It's a great space saver and since it was less than $14 at Ikea, an excellent solution to our space issues!
Are there any feng shui experts reading? I swear, every time I see these strips the visual impact of all those bristling blades makes me avert my eyes. I've always wondered if it is a feng shui no-no, I don't pretend to know a thing about it but...shudder. Mine are in a childproof drawer.
You just inspired me; I'd had an Ikea one sitting on a shelf for months and hadn't put it up yet :).
Always put handles up. You don't want it to slip when you grab it and cut your hand. Be safe.
I want to move mine under the cupboard Its present location is a direct sightline from the fron tdoor in my open-plan house. Maybe I read too many mysteries, but I always envision the stealthy murderer spotting the knives....
I don't have the magnetic strip, but in my knife block, the blades are always oriented away from me so that if it slips when I pull it out and the knife clatters toward me, it's the dull side and not the blade.
I bought one ten years ago without having a space to put it. I still don't have a space to put it--like another commenter said, my kitchen is also all cabinets and windows, with not enough vertical space between counter and cabinet to put it up. But. My husband found a fantastic use for it, solving two problems: Spice storage and using something I already had. So it's store face-down in my spice cabinet, holding up spice jars. (We glued a small washer to the top of non-metal spice jars.) I wish I had three more magnetic knife racks now!
I have to agree with the feng-shui commenter above - having all the sharp things just hanging out on the wall makes me so uncomfortable. I house-sat last spring and they had a magnetic strip in their kitchen and I did not like reaching for knives in the center, I was concerned about nicking my fingers on the neighboring blades.
These make me SUPER uncomfortable too and always have. I don't care much for countertop knife blocks either, but I have a knife block that is made to fit in a drawer, which I LOVE - it keeps them contained, I don't have to put a cover on them every time I use them which must be a pain, and I don't have to worry about nicking my fingers trying to get to a middle one or be creeped out by the feng shui (or if not technically feng shui, what I interpret as visual badness, anyway).
My roommates had one of these at my last place and I definitely miss it. There's no space for one in my current apartment, but I loathe those big knife blocks sitting on my counter (roommate has one with knives he hasn't touched since before I moved in) so I can't wait to have one of these again. They're especially great for pretty Japanese knives--they really are like art pieces.
When I moved in with my fiance (now husband), we each had a big butcher block knife set. We have a small kitchen, and the two ginormous wooden blocks took up a big chunk of the counter next to the sink. We bought two magnet strips and spent an hour on a Saturday morning installing them. It was like having a brand new kitchen, with all the free counter space!
