Lunchtime Event: Chef Competition at Daley Plaza

Looking for a little lunchtime cooking fun? Head over to the Daley Plaza farmer's market today to watch an Iron Chef-style competition and pick up a free tote bag.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., chefs Mark Mendez of Carnivale, Jimmy Madla of Coobah and Kaminsky Thomas of Anteprima will show off their culinary skills in the Country Chef Challenge competition. One of them will be named Master of the Market.

They will each get 30 minutes to shop for ingredients at the market and 30 minutes to prepare their dishes. That's an even tighter time frame than Iron Chef contestants get! But we're guessing they won't be cooking quite so many courses.

If you're one of the first 1,000 people there, you'll get a free reusable bag featuring an award-winning design by Adrianna Hedean, a Stephen Tyng Mather High School Junior.

At last year's event, Chef Michael Garbin of the Union League Club of Chicago won the challenge with his Fruit Pallet dish.

Check out the Daley Plaza market again next week, on August 14, when Epicurious editors will be in town to hand out more free goodies.
