We're big fans of the show LOST, so of course we'll be tuning in for the finale extravaganza this Sunday. And, of course, that means some appropriately LOST-themed snacks. Our Smoke Monster Popcorn is an homage to that mysterious, evil force we've learned so much about recently. Does it look like it's just popcorn covered in black pepper? Trust us, it's not. Read on – the secrets of our recipe will be revealed.
Warning: The following may contain spoilers from previously aired episodes.
Normally, we might not want to serve popcorn that looks like it's covered in smokey dust, but this is a special occasion. Plus, it's actually quite tasty. The black powder is made from a combination of mild Nigella seeds, tangy ground loomi, black pepper, smoked salt and poppy seeds.
To serve the popcorn, we chose a carved wooden box with a mysterious island-like quality and lined it with plastic wrap. But if you don't have one of those laying around, a bowl will work just fine. And then we decided to take it one step further by cutting out magazine photos of some of the departed characters and taping them to wooden skewers to be swallowed up by the monster. True, none of these major characters were killed directly by the smoke monster, but we couldn't find any photos of Mr. Eko, Bram or the pilot. Those are a little hard to come by.
Here's one more serving tip: Reserve a bit of the spice mixture (or make a little extra) to sprinkle over the top right before serving to make it look extra smokey.
Smoke Monster Popcorn
serves 6 as a snack
1/3 cup popcorn kernels, popped
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons Nigella seeds (also called black seeds)
1 teaspoon ground loomi (also called black lemon)
1 teaspoon black peppercorns
1 teaspoon smoked salt (or regular salt)
2 tablespoons poppy seeds
Pop popcorn using your preferred method.
Meanwhile, combine Nigella seeds, loomi, black peppercorns and smoked salt in a spice grinder. Grind to a fine powder.
Place popcorn in a bowl and drizzle with olive oil. Toss to combine well. Sprinkle with spice mixture and poppy seeds. Mix to combine.

Bacsac Bacsquare 04...

This EFFING BRILLIANT! Well done. :P
This would go great with MacCutcheon whiskey and some fish biscuits
But Artz didn't get killed by the smoke monster. He blew himself up!
This is so funny, I love it!!
I'm a Lost geek, so this is awesome. Also looks like one of my son's favorite popcorn snacks, butter popcorn covered in cocoa powder/sugar mixture.
Another LOST junky over here! yumm smoke monster popcorn!
Hey now, the pilot has a name...its Frank Lapedis! lol
Seriously, why are more of us not making fish biscuits? There's great photo reference out there. We, of course, are going to do some Dharma Beer.
Maybe the woman who had a panda-head birthday cake made for her son's birthday party over on OhDeeDoh awhile back can hook you up with a polar bear head cake.
And serve it all on airline food trays.
jmorri26, she means the original pilot of flight 815. Lapedis isn't dead yet...I don't think...or did he just die in the sub? It's hard to keep track!!
On last night's Dinner Impossible, the Lost Episode, Robert made wild boar which I thought an appropriate Lost food, but this Smoke Monster Popcorn trumps it!
Over on the Cheap Healthy Good website, there are more suggestions for Lost finale foods. It occurred to me while reading that one of my favs, turnips, should be served as well for Baby Turniphead, of course!
(That's what the Losties on the boards were calling Claire's baby when he was born... when was that, Season 3, maybe?)
ebarrett3 yep, Lapedis was in the sub up front. I forgot about the first pilot. Still sad to see Greg Grunberg get yanked out the window by the smoke monster.
That's very cute! Now I have to throw a Lost party!
Great idea! The addition of the characters really makes it. This blog has some neat ideas for Dharma snacks.

not to be a total nerd but it's "lapidus." what i want to know is if there's a recovery group for all of us. what will we do after it's all over? i get choked up just thinking about it. le sigh...
I emphatically believe Lapidus is not dead!!!
Now i want popcorn! I am holding out for the Sawyer/Miles LAPD spinoff!
Mango is the LOST food of choice!
The real question of the day..... WHAT are we gonna do when LOST ends?? :-(
Flight 815's pilot was played by Greg Grunberg (of Felicity and Heroes fame). You'll have to make him a little pilot outfit, but you can find a pic of him.
Love the popcorn. Dharma beer is key.
So is Richard just DEAD??? He just got flung off the screen like a rag doll and that's it?
Is anyone else off the bus with Lost like I am? I think it is great that people are still excited by it, for sure. I will be watching on Sunday but I feel jilted. Reading some interviews with the muckity-mucks also has not made me think that the finale will be fulfilling. Way too many large questions to answer. Maybe they will pull a Dallas Newhart, ehh who knows. That wouldn't do it for me, but maybe it would make it feel less like church, whoa wait a second the finale is on a Sunday, maybe it is all a Bible fable!
The ride has been great up until this season, but this isn't a Murakami novel, I need answers. The plot requires answers. Jeez this has worked me up.
Glad I have this Lost forum to get it out... wait this is the Lost forum right? Right? Boone is that you?
Perhaps to fill the void there could be a reality show to find the answers -- call it "Quest" or something...
On the subject of old Smokey... anybody else get the giggles whenever the hear a NYC taxi printing out a receipt as that is the same sound old cinderhead makes when he is on a rampage... I noticed it a while back and was annoyed that it took me that long to realize it was the same sound & now whenever i hear it, it cracks me up!
I don't think Richard is dead. At least I hope not!! Guess we'll find out on Sunday. Can't wait!
Oh and I'm in agreement on the Sawyer/Miles cop series spin off. I thought that right after the episode where we saw them as partners. Instant hit show right there!
To quote Charlie:
"...and this one's called, "Monster Eats the Pilot.""
I'm a lover of popcorn myself, and am constantly finding new ways to fix it. I'll have to give this one a shot. I'll probably add a little lemon juice for the lightning!
UmAnOnion--Thank you!!! You just answered one of my all-time questions about Lost. Way back in Season 1, when the castaways were still all living on the beach, the monster was rampaging through the jungle one night and Rose said something like, "I've heard that sound back in the Bronx." Now I know!!! Thank you!!!!!!!
