Q: I am looking for a product that has a coffee grinder on the top and a French press plunger on the bottom. Basically, a French press with a built-in grinder on top.
Does such a thing exist?

Editor: Alix, I've never see such a thing! I'm curious why you're looking for it, too. A burr grinder is going to give you the best results when making French press coffee. If you are looking for a compact coffee system for travel or a small apartment, then consider a hand-cranked coffee grinder and a normal French press.
Readers, any advice?

i've never heard/seen this before. didn't find anything after googling it either... i'd agree with the hand grinder and basic small french press.
sounds like you want to make fresh coffee with a french press without the hassle of it. ;) i feel ya'.
I work a little with companies that make coffee appliances and products, and this is not something I've ever come across.
If you want something and it doesn't exist, register a patent for it!
Time to mash a Slapchop with a french press
From an engineering standpoint, the grinder is either going to involve an electric motor/blade/battery setup or a heavy set of burrs. Either way, putting this on top of the french press is quite likely to make it seriously top-heavy and unstable during use. You could put it on the underside, but it still involves transferring ground coffee to the press after grinding.
For ease of transport and use, though, I would recommend a small hand crank burr grinder like the Hario Mini Mill Grinder to go with a regular french press.
I'm not sure what advantage would be gained from that.
