Recently I stumbled upon a reusable wrap that keeps sandwiches, carrot sticks and brownies completely protected while en route to your work. And it's easy on the eyes... and easy to clean. Waste-free, allergy-free, toxin-free lunch packaging? Could it really be possible?
Packing lunches is a great way to save money when mapping out a weekly and monthly budget. But one of the downsides is the potential waste: the plastic wrap, plastic bags, and lunch sacks. The Sandwich Wrap by Kids Konserve eliminates the need for waste altogether, and it even lies flat to become a portable placemat that you can wipe down when you're finished with lunch.
While I don't have kids of my own yet, I do pack my lunches a few times a week, and I love a good picnic or road trip every now and again. I imagine these wraps would be perfect for such occasions, and with warmer weather right around the corner, it seems a good a time as any to stock up. Even if you don't pack lunches for yourself or family members, the sandwich wraps would be a great packaging option for leftovers. The options seem endless; I'm just sorry I didn't stumble upon them sooner!

They're pretty, but I haven't invested. I just use waxed paper which is quite biodegradable and has other uses in my kitchen.
I will definitely buy. I have Lunchskins, and while they're good for packing snacks for the kiddo, they're not quite big enough for an entire grown-up sandwich.
I would love to pick up some of these for my kids' lunches! Thanks for the post. -- Lauren @ MomHomeGuide
What are they made of? Silicone? I looked on the website, and they say what it's *not* (BPA and PVC free), but not what it is. Do they feel like they'll hold up to wear and tear, washing and reuse?
I think the material looks like some kind of coated canvas. That wouldn't work so good in the wash if the coating was hydrophobic, and the velcro could hold in the bacteria. I could be wrong of course, but either way I prefer the metal tins or pyrex.
@Thriftathome I like wax paper too but if it says biodegradable it's a greenwash. It means it will eventually decompose, just like certain types of nuclear waste and toxins. The term to look for is compostable, so it degrades within 100 days to harmless materials. Also it's good to examine the entire life cycle of a product, not just the last stage. Where was the paper and the wax sourced from? Were trees taken down for it?
The website says it's LDPE, which is the same plastic as saran wrap. I'm assuming it's just a thicker sheet that's been printed.
Karen from The Art of Doing Stuff did a tutorial on how to make your own re-usable wraps not too long ago. Hers were the beeswax coated style though, so I suppose technically they don't qualify as allergy-free; as some people do have beeswax sensitivities.

I have a couple of these and they are quite heavy-duty. You couldn't rip them if you tried, although mine are showing some wear along the creases where they were originally folded when shipped. They're not going to last forever, but should hold up for a good long time.
My colleague and I use the Kids Konserves for our own sandwiches and our kids'. They feel like heavy oilcloth (aka PVC but I don't think these are made of PVC) and agreed with mrl28801 they can't be ripped (at least not easily). They have Velcro for closure and are easily wiped down - never tried dishwasher. They are easy to use and easy to clean up.
Thank you to theKitchn for your wonderful review! To clarify, we use non-leaching LDPE #4 plastic for our reusable Food Kozies as a safe alternative to disposable plastic baggies. Our customers tell us that they like the non-fabric solution because it is easier to clean, dries quickly, keeps food from seeping through, and the slick surface is perfect for messy foods. The plastic surface also makes an ideal placemat. All of our products are tested free of BPA, phthalates, PVC and lead.
