We've talked before about the best way to store potatoes, onions, and other root vegetables. If you've got the space and wherewithal, it doesn't get much better than these storage drawers. Deep baskets keep onions and potatoes separate - and neat! (No floating onion skins cluttering the cabinets.) There's even a bread box. Don't mind if we do!

What a great idea. I am experiencing deep envy over this. :-)
Sweet.
Its really pretty, but I'm worried about the proximity of the potatoes and onions. Doesn't one of those produce too much ethylene for the long-term storage of the other?
Love this ... just wonder if "outta sight, outta mind" might become a problem here.
One of the things I love in my 1978-made kitchen is the bread drawer. It has a plexiglass cover to lift as I pull the wooden drawer out. I keep all my breads in there - it ROCKS! I would LOVE to have another drawer for potatoes and onions. Currently my onions are in the corner of the counter in a ceramic bowl and my potatoes are sadly stored in another area that is not great for the "flow" of cooking.
lazy_lurker--that was my first thought, too.
I covet these unbelievably. I keep this stuff on my counters in pretty bowls, but this is much more ideal.
Throw in pull out bins for 50bs bags of flour and oats and you would have my dream kitchen.
That is perfect. Bookmarked for when I have my own home!
Watched on Anna Olson's show, she has drawers for her flour, sugar etc. Envy. MY wishlist is getting longer.
I use two ikea wicker baskets for my potatoes and onions, which fit neatly inside a cupboard. The cupboard is in a fairly cool ares of the kitchen and the baskets are small enough to lift out when I need them. A much more budget friendly solution than a kitchen re-fit. My friends mum kept hers in a washing up bowl.
Apparently if you keep an apple in with the potatoes it keeps them from sprouting.
Love this!!!
Thanks about the apple and potato info.
Onions and potatoes should NOT be stored that closely.
It is a nice way to clear your counter. Personally, fruits and/or vegetables gathered in a bowl on counters are always inviting. Makes the kitchen look homey to me. That sterile kitchen look is not my fav.
Tisis the first time I've heard of someone not refrigerating onions! You're not afraid of them going bad?
I live alone on a strict budget in a city where fruits and veggies are exorbitantly expensive (an apple is anywhere from $2-4), so I do most of my shopping at Costco in the beginning of the month. The bag of onions that I get has to last for the entire month, as do the tomatoes (though I often finish them in a week.. I'm weak for tomatoes!). If I run out or they go bad, I have to make do without until the next month.
*This is (sorry, iPad doesn't always register my typing, unless I seriously slow it down).
It's a neat idea, but lets get real. That bread would become stale and rock hard in about 2 days. Does anyone really keep that many onions and potatoes on hand?
Good point about the bread-- and yes! I keep a lot of onions and potatoes around. The potatoes I don't really eat/like [not sure why I keep buying them] but I use onions with nearly every meal.
My mom keeps potatoes in a big ceramic crock on the floor, with a wooden lid to keep the light out, that can hold a ten pound bag. Onions go in a hanging wire basket. We don't keep enough potatoes on hand to justify a crock, and have less free floor space, but we still use the wire basket to hang onions and garlic (on the bottom tier; fruit goes on the top tier.) Tomatoes go in a bowl on the counter. If we have extra potatoes we put them in an opaque ceramic covered casserole dish on the counter. I like to keep anything perishable on the counter so we remember to check it regularly.
