Some days, when you think you've seen it all, you stumble across an egg filled with a brownie. It happens. But, can you believe it? This cool idea comes from a Spanish food blogger and the recipe is surprisingly simple.
The key to using egg shells is to make a small hole in the bottom of the egg and remove the yolk and egg white through the hold. This is a crucial step in making Ukranian-style dyed eggs, and there are a few tools available specifically for the process. One the egg is hollow, it's prime for recipes like this one!
Have you ever made a baked good in an egg shell?

I saw this on another blog and still have no idea why you'd do it. It's not a very cute presentation. Plus if it cracked, you'd have a gross mess.
this is very cool idea!!! but definitely need skills!!

Why??? I'm with HighWater. I really don't get this. I'm just picturing biting down on bits of egg shell that end up stuck to the brownie.
Brownies are just fine the way they are. No need to mess with them. This might even be worse that the cupcakes in jars phenomenon.
Though I haven't checked the blogs listed, I have to say that I have been seeing this after the episode of Top Chef Just Desserts where they had to recreate the edible land of Wonka's factory. One of the chefs made cakes in eggs to replicate a golden egg.
Maybe these could be done at Easter?
I don't know. I agree that it is a lot of fuss for a brownie. I'm sure they make egg-shaped pans that are much easier. Minus the wonder of the shell, of course. But couldn't you just dip it in white chocolate?
yuck.
getting one tiny piece of shell while chewing is the worst!
this might be one way to get me from eating a brownie.
Agree on the yuck factor....and chewing shells? No thanks, I pass on this one...
One more time : YUCK!
:|
Another big yuck.
I would do this only make jello inside. What a surprise to open an egg (dyed at easter time especially) to a jello desert (or jello shot... I mean why not...)
My first thought was about food safety, but then I thought perhaps the brownies were simply molded into an egg shape and dipped into a white chocolate coating. I agree with the "yuck" comments.
i think it would be great to do if you serve them to kids. it's unexpected and they would find it entertaining.
Oooh, I think Wittyname is on to something with the jello shots.... Although I would be concerned about the food safety - can you wash the inside of the shells?
No. BUT - I will try this just to mess with my husband's head. Ask him to crack a few "eggs" in a bowl for me while I'm making Sunday breakfast. He'll freak. I cracked a bad egg once in my life - ended up with a bowl full of blood. I'm still traumatized and a little anxious every time I reach for an egg. Imagine the horror of discovering something dark brown and springy in the egg shell! I'd be like, "Oh my Lord - what is that? WHAT IS THAT?!" Would this be spousal abuse? Maybe a good Halloween trick?
@caralovesyou Well, you could get pasturized eggs if you are really concerned but I say that any opening in an egg large enough to get the egg out and liquid batter or jello in is also big enough to get water in to clean the inside of the shell.
Anyway, I don't know why everyone is being such a hater. OK, the brownie does look a little odd but I think the concept has a lot of potential for a creative one-of-a-kind dessert.
Also, I wonder if you could somehow fill it with something resembling a Cadbury Cream Egg? That would be awesome. Maybe first fill it with some chocolate and swirl it around to coat the inside of the shell and then pour in the "filling." Then dye the egg and have a very special treat.
Again WHY?
I think kids would find this fun.
Why not? :)
As far as food safety...don't you use raw eggs in the batter anyway? It all gets cooked together right? I think this would be a cute surprise in a child's lunch...other than that...maybe too much work.
Thank you for featuring my brownieggs :))
This recipe was made just for fun, to present an "egg" as dessert and look at people's reactions! I thought it would be a good idea for April Fool's day (in Spain the 28th December) Also if you present them without the eggshell, they are perfect for Easter... there are several pictures in my blog. And if you are worried about eating eggshell crumbs, it is the same with hard boiled eggs... you just have to peel them!!! It is not that hard, believe me. My kids loved them...
As far as salmonella is concerned, the eggs are washed, then put in salted water for half an hour, and finally baked at 350ºF!!!! Only a Houdini salmonella would survive all that!
I wish you a nice day all :)
I'm with Calamity CJ- the shell is cooked, so is the raw egg you put in the mix. It all gets cooked. Sometimes our obsession with food safety goes too far... who hasn't eaten raw egg in cake mix or some uncooked meringue? Loosen up people...
I think the food safety concern was in regard to my previous comment about filling this with jello (which wouldn't be cooked) rather than brownie batter (which would be). So it's not a crazy concern... pretty legit actually.
Did the haters even bother to read the recipie? I think not...
The eggs are soaked in salt water for 30 mins, long enough to kill bacteria. Heck, bleach them if you're freaked out by it.
The eggs also get oiled on the inside, which would stop the brownie from sticking to the shell.
Yikes.
People, live a little! Enjoy the tiny things in life and allow some joy and novelty into your lives... geeze!
This hater read the recipe, and just hates eggs. Still gross, sorry. (not a hater, just a truth sayer!)
How do we get our chickens to lay brownie eggs?
Love it, Stephanie, thank you for the post. It's a fresh and creative take on a ubiquitous recipe, and the presentation made me and my little guys smile :D
To the Ovophobes; perhaps we could all get reacquainted with the notion of not saying something at all if we've nothing pleasant to contribute? I mean, really: The post IS titled, "LOOK! Brownies baked in EGG SHELLS" :D
Interesting. I would love it if they were baked in some sort of candy shell that you could also eat.
On the plus side, you do not need to purchase/store a set of egg shaped pans for Easter AND you would be far less likely to accidentally eat half a pan of brownies. I like it.
I thought this was a cute idea and unexpected. I don't think the intention was to have you eat the egg shell but to crack it open to find not a hard boiled egg but a brownie. I love it! Thanks for posting
I think it's marvelous! Very funny. I am doing this to my kids sometime!
Bizarre!
This is such a great idea. I've never seen anything like it. You're so creative!
:)
I like this cooky idea. :)
Double yuck.
No thank you.
